Description
Experience Snorkeling Molokini Without the Crowds!
The adventure begins on shore with locally-roasted Maui Coffee Roasters coffee, Ghirardelli hot chocolate, and fresh warm cinnamon rolls from Maui's beloved Cinnamon Roll Place, all while watching the sun rise over Haleakalā and the Big Island. Then it's a short 15-minute boat ride to Molokini — a partially submerged volcanic crater and protected marine conservation area just 3 miles (4.8 km) off the South Maui coast. With up to 200 feet (61 m) of visibility and 250+ species of fish, you'll have roughly 45 minutes of pristine solitude in the clearest water in all of Hawaii before the crowds arrive. Later in the morning, roughly 1,000–1,500 snorkelers typically fill the same waters.
After Molokini, the tour heads to Turtle Town along the Makena Coast, where Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles stop at natural "cleaning stations" to have the algae scrubbed from their shells by tropical fish — a remarkable behavior you can observe up close. Keep your eyes open for parrotfish, yellow tangs, eels, octopuses, and even spinner dolphins. In winter months (November–April), humpback whale sightings are common from the boat.
Breakfast is plated and served in three courses throughout the morning: a yogurt parfait with granola, blueberries, and honey followed by a full hot course of egg bites or scrambled eggs, breakfast sausage, potatoes, and pico de gallo. The open bar opens after snorkeling, featuring POGmosas (passion fruit, orange, and guava juice with champagne), bloody marys, juices, and soft drinks. The tour wraps up with a leisurely cruise down the Makena coastline, returning you to shore by late morning — with your entire day still ahead of you!

Wildlife Guidelines
Turtles, rays, sharks, seals, and dolphins are all protected species in Hawaii. You are not allowed to chase, harass, feed, or TOUCH any of the marine species. Please enjoy their company if they approach from a distance and calmly move away from them if in their path. Please also be respectful of the fact that coral is a living organism and any standing, touching, or knocking over will irreparably damage the organism that takes a very long time to grow and is essential to our marine reefs.

FAQs
What marine life can I see when snorkeling at Molokini Crater and Turtle Town?
The waters around Molokini are teeming with diverse marine life. You'll encounter tropical Hawaiian fish including parrotfish, yellow tangs, and surgeonfish. With some luck, you may spot manta rays, octopuses, eels, and of course Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles at Turtle Town's famous cleaning stations. Dolphins are commonly spotted year-round, and during winter months (November–April), humpback whale sightings from the boat are a highlight. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, as these are wild animals in their natural habitat.
What is snorkeling at Molokini Crater like?
Molokini is a partially submerged volcanic crater and protected marine sanctuary about 3 miles (4.8 km) off the South Maui coast. The water clarity is extraordinary — visibility regularly reaches up to 200 feet (61 m), making it some of the clearest water in all of Hawaii. The crater's protected crescent shape creates calm conditions ideal for snorkeling. The fish concentration along the crater wall is exceptional, with over 250 species documented in the area.
When is the best time to snorkel Molokini?
The Sunrise tour is widely considered the best time to experience Molokini. By arriving before any other snorkel boats, guests enjoy the crater in complete solitude. By mid-morning, 1,000–1,500 snorkelers typically fill the same area. Early morning conditions are also typically the calmest, with light winds and glassy water.
What is "beach-loading" and how does it work?
Because there are no boat harbors in South Maui, guests board the catamaran by walking through the shallow surf at Maluaka Beach. The guides are experienced at helping every guest board safely and as dry as possible — but expect to get your feet and lower legs wet. Wear sandals or flip-flops you can easily remove, and leave shoes that are hard to dry at home. Children and guests of all abilities are accommodated.
Is this tour beginner-friendly for snorkeling?
Yes. The crew includes certified marine naturalists who provide briefings and hands-on assistance in the water. Multiple reviewers note crew members going above and beyond to help nervous or first-time snorkelers feel comfortable. Both snorkel sites are well-suited to beginners — Molokini's protected crater provides calm, clear conditions, and Turtle Town is a shallow, sheltered area.
Can I snorkel with a mustache or beard?
You can snorkel with a beard or mustache, but facial hair can prevent a tight mask seal and allow water to leak in. If you'd prefer not to shave, bring petroleum jelly or chapstick — applying it to your mustache before putting on the mask can help create a better seal.
Can I wear glasses or contacts while snorkeling?
Glasses cannot be worn with a snorkel mask. Contacts are perfectly fine and are often the best solution for clear underwater vision. If you have a prescription mask, feel free to bring it — rental masks are not prescription. Note that everything appears about 25% larger and closer underwater, which helps somewhat without correction.
What sunscreen should I use and why?
Please use reef-safe, non-nano mineral sunscreen only. Common sunscreen ingredients including oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens are harmful to coral reefs and banned in Hawaii. Reef-SAFE sunscreens use non-nano particles that are too large to be absorbed by corals. Consider wearing a long-sleeve rash guard as a sun-protection alternative. If choosing mineral sunscreen, ensure the label says "non-nano."
Will there be photos taken, or can I bring a camera?
GoPro cameras are available to rent on board for an extra fee. You are welcome to bring your own waterproof camera. The company is not responsible for any damaged or lost items.
