Description

Stone Hollow Canyon - Full Day Canyoneering Tour near East Zion

Ten rappels. Six miles. One extraordinary full day in the slot canyons of East Zion. Stone Hollow Canyon is the most rappel-intensive canyoneering experience in the area. It's a full-day adventure designed for guests who are ready to go deep into the sport and emerge with a collection of canyon descents unlike anything else in southern Utah.
After checking in at Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort, your guide takes you on an approach hike into the Stone Hollow canyon system. Over the course of the day, you'll complete 10 rappels with the highest reaching 100 feet (30 m), navigating a variety of descents — from wide open drops with panoramic views to narrow slot sections where the walls close in around you and every footfall echoes. Between rappels, you'll hike through stunning backcountry terrain, learning about the geology and ecology of the canyon from your guide. The hike in and out of the canyon is one of the more challenging aspects of the tour — expect rough, off-trail terrain and significant elevation change.
Stone Hollow operates year-round, but in spring, winter, and fall the canyon is cold and potentially wet. Dress accordingly in warm, non-cotton layers. A gear rental package (waterproof hiking shoes and neoprene socks) is available and is recommended for wet conditions.

FAQs

Is Stone Hollow Canyon suitable for beginners?

Stone Hollow is not recommended as a first canyoneering experience. The length of the hike (5–6 miles / 8–10 km), the number of rappels (10), and the ruggedness of the terrain make this a demanding full-day undertaking. Guests in good physical condition who are comfortable with sustained physical activity over rough terrain can take on Stone Hollow without prior experience — your guide provides full instruction.

What is the hike like to reach the canyon?

The approach hike into and out of Stone Hollow is the most physically challenging part of the tour. Expect rough, off-trail terrain, steep sections, and some scrambling. The exit from the canyon may include wading through water. Strong, supportive footwear is essential. Bring more food and water than you think you'll need.

Do I need prior experience to go canyoneering?

No prior experience is necessary. Your guide provides a full safety briefing and teaches all required techniques — rappelling, rope management, and canyon navigation — before you enter the canyon. The tour is designed to be accessible to first-timers with the right level of fitness.

What does the guide teach me before we start?

Your guide will walk you through how to put on and adjust your harness, how to use the rappelling device, proper body position for descending, and how to communicate with the group in the canyon. The safety briefing is thorough, and your guide stays with you through every rappel.

Is canyoneering safe? What safety measures are in place?

Your guide is certified and trained in both canyoneering techniques and wilderness first aid. All technical gear — harnesses, helmets, ropes, and rappel devices — meets industry safety standards and is inspected regularly. Guides assess conditions in real time and have the authority to modify routes or turn back if conditions become unsafe. The weight limit of 250 lbs (113 kg) applies to all canyoneering tours and is a safety requirement related to harness and anchor load ratings.

Why is there a weight limit?

The weight limit is 250 lbs (113 kg). This limit is set for participant safety and is related to the load-rated capacity of the harnesses, rappelling devices, and anchor systems used. It is strictly enforced.

What is the best time of year for canyoneering Stone Hollow Canyon?

Late spring through early fall (May–October) offers the most comfortable temperatures and the most reliable dry conditions. Summer is warm and canyons provide welcome shade. Fall is a favorite for cooler temperatures and beautiful desert colors. In spring, winter, and fall, canyon temperatures can be significantly colder than outside, especially in wet sections — dress in warm, non-cotton layers accordingly.

Are photos taken during the tour?

Your guide will help you capture great moments throughout the tour. Bring your own camera or smartphone. A waterproof case or housing is recommended for any canyon that may have water. Selfie sticks or long poles are generally not practical inside narrow slot canyons.

Who are the guides and what are their qualifications?

Our guides are local experts with deep knowledge of the geology, history, wildlife, and ecology of southern Utah. Guides are trained in safety protocols and first aid, and are dedicated to providing both educational and entertaining experiences tailored to each group.

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend booking at least 2 weeks in advance, and several months ahead for large groups or peak season visits to ensure availability.

What is your approach to sustainability and conservation?

Our guides follow Leave No Trace principles on all tours. Guests are asked to pack out all waste, stay on designated paths, and respect all plants, wildlife, and rock formations. We operate in and around federally protected lands and take stewardship of those landscapes seriously.

What wildlife might I encounter on tours in the East Zion area?

The East Zion and southern Utah region is home to mule deer, coyotes, jackrabbits, lizards, hawks, eagles, ravens, and a variety of desert songbirds. Mountain lions are native to the area but extremely rarely encountered. Rattlesnakes are present in the region but generally avoid human contact — wearing closed-toe shoes and watching where you place your hands is good practice.

Do tours run in bad weather?

Most tours run rain or shine. However, if severe weather creates unsafe conditions, we will offer guests a different date or a full refund. For tours involving dirt road access (such as Candy Cliffs and White Pocket), road conditions after rain may require rescheduling.
