Description
Experience the Bio Bay of St. Croix - One of 7 in the world!
The tour departs from Salt River Marina and covers 3/4 of a mile (1.2 km) to reach the bay. The tour typically begins near sunset, giving guests time to adjust their eyes to the darkness before arriving at the bay — where the real magic begins. Once inside, you'll have 45 minutes of free-roaming exploration. Unlike many other bio bay tours, this one lets you explore independently inside the bay rather than following a rigid paddling route. One guide is stationed at the bay exit for safety, while a second guide roams within the bay, available for questions or deeper dives into the science and ecology of what you're witnessing.
As your kayak skims across the dark water, you agitate billions of dinoflagellates — microscopic plankton that emit a bright blue-green glow as a defense mechanism. In a see-through kayak, the effect has been described by guests as "a thousand shooting stars at once."

Wildlife Guidelines
Bioluminescence in Salt River Bio Bay is created by microscopic plankton called dinoflagellates. When their water is disturbed — by paddles, hands, or movement — they emit a bright blue-green glow as a defense mechanism. Please do not use any DEET-based repellents or lotions, as these chemicals harm the dinoflagellates. Apply any insect repellent at least 30 minutes before your tour to minimize transfer to the water. A 2014 study of bioluminescent bays identified swimming as one of the reasons that bio-bays crash. So together with the other tour operators in Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve, we have agreed to ban swimming in the bay. This is for both for your own safety, and to protect the organisms we are here to see

FAQs
When is the best time to see the bioluminescence?
The bioluminescent intensity depends on weather conditions such as rain, tide, moon phase, sunlight, and many other natural factors outside anyone's control. Ideally, the best time to visit is around the new moon and during the drier months. That said, tours run year-round and guests have reported stunning experiences across many conditions. Your guides will give you the best available experience on the night of your tour — and if conditions are very poor (such as a very bright full moon), they will communicate this honestly ahead of time.
What is bioluminescence?
Bioluminescence in Salt River Bio Bay is caused by microscopic plankton called dinoflagellates (Pyrodinium bahamense). When their water is disturbed — by paddles, hands, or waves — they emit a bright blue-green glow as a defense mechanism. Salt River Bay is one of only six or seven full-time bioluminescent bays in the world and is currently being studied by the National Park Service and Dr. Michael Latz of Scripps Institute California.
Can we take pictures during the tour?
Yes, but with some limitations. Bioluminescence is notoriously difficult to capture on standard phone cameras or DSLRs without specialized settings and long exposure capability. Most guests find the experience is best enjoyed in person. Your guides are not responsible for any damaged or lost items.
Do I need to know how to kayak?
No prior experience is necessary. The majority of guests have never kayaked before. Your guides provide a short introduction and instructions before the tour begins. That said, guests in reviews note that having some basic experience or fitness does make the paddle more comfortable, particularly on windier nights.
Cancellation Policy
All cancellations must be made 48 hours prior to tour departure time for groups up to 5, and 72 hours prior to departure time for groups of 6+ for full refund.
If the customer requests to abandon the tour and return to the marina, or if a guide determines that a guest is unable to safely complete the tour for any reason, or if a guide determines that a guest is affecting the safety of the group, the guest will return to the marina, and no refund will be given.
Any guest who are no-shows, and any guest who do not arrive at the appropriate time will not be given refunds. Cancellations within 2 hours of the tour start will be considered "no-shows"
Weather happens. When the staff determines the weather or conditions are not safe, the tour will be postponed and/or cancelled. Refunds will be issued when tours are cancelled due to acts of god.
