About
Humboldt is a refuge for many migratory birds, thousands of shorebirds, ducks, and geese. Just west of Arcata and on the east side of Humboldt Bay is the Mad River Slough, where loggers dug out a channel and connected the river to the bay in order to float logs to the mill yards that sit on the edge of Humboldt Bay. Today, this area has become a wildlife refuge for many of the diverse species that pass through.
Once we’re in the water, we’ll explore the slough, keeping our eyes out for birds common to the area, such as Red-tailed and Red-shouldered Hawks, Kestrels, Harriers, Kites, and Osprey. We may likely see shorebirds such as Dunlin, Sandpiper, Dowitcher, Godwit, and Willet. Depending on the time of year, we may also spot some ducks, Aleutian Geese, Snow Geese, and Pacific Black Brant.
