FAQs
How challenging is this trip?
This tour is appropriate for beginner to intermediate paddlers. The waters of the South Slough are generally calm with minimal current or boat traffic, making it a relaxed paddle suitable for most fitness levels. Wind or tidal conditions can add mild challenge, but your guide will adjust the route accordingly to keep the experience enjoyable for everyone.
Do I need previous kayaking experience?
No prior kayaking experience is necessary. This is a great tour for first-time paddlers and those looking to build confidence on the water. Your guide will provide basic instruction and safety tips before launching, and all necessary equipment is included.
What is special about the South Slough tour?
South Coast Tours is the only outfitter with a permit to run commercial tours at the slough. The South Slough reserve is the first national estuarine research reserve in the United States. The birding is also wonderful in the South Slough.
Which type of kayak should I choose?
When booking, you can choose between a sit-on-top or sit-inside kayak:
- Sit-on-top kayaks are open, easy to use, and great for relaxed paddling.
- Sit-inside kayaks provide a more enclosed feel, but can offer protection from the wind and spashes. Taller people above 6'4" can sometimes feel that the sit-inside kayaks are a bit cramped.
Both are stable, beginner-friendly, and well-suited to this tour—choose the one you feel most comfortable in.
What kind of wildlife might we see?
The South Slough is a hotspot for coastal wildlife. You might see Bald Eagles, Osprey, Great Blue Herons, Brown Pelicans, Egrets, Belted Kingfishers, and many other waterbirds. Harbor seals are often spotted in the water or hauled out along the banks, and sea lions occasionally make an appearance. Depending on the season, you may also see jellyfish, crabs, and other estuary life below the surface.
Do we need wetsuits for this tour?
No, wetsuits are not needed.
Should I bring my camera?
It's best to leave the camera behind unless it is rated for use in and around water. Our guides will be sure to snap some photos of you while you’re out on your tour as well.
Should I tip my guide?
Tipping is always appreciated and a great way to recognize your guide’s hard work. Guiding is part of the service industry, and if your guide provides a safe, informative, and enjoyable experience, a tip is a meaningful way to say thank you.
