Somers Bay Guided Kayak Tour on Flathead Lake

Paddle through the calm, protected waters of Somers Bay and the Juniper Islands on this fun and family-friendly guided kayak tour on Flathead Lake. This scenic stretch of shoreline is rich with local history, where you’ll glide past remnants of the early 1900s Somers Lumber Company pier system while taking in expansive Montana views.
Designed with beginners and young paddlers in mind, this sheltered route offers a relaxed and approachable introduction to kayaking. Wildlife sightings are common, with bald eagles, osprey, and other native birds often seen around the islands. On warm summer days, the experience may even include a swim stop or the chance to take a rock jump into the clear lake waters, adding an extra layer of fun for kids and adults alike.
Morning departures are especially popular with families, offering calm conditions, cooler temperatures, and an easy start to the day on the water. Evening paddles provide a more peaceful, scenic experience as the light softens over Flathead Lake and Somers Bay grows quieter. With warm sunset colors reflecting off the water and wildlife becoming more active, the evening option is perfect for unwinding and soaking in the lake at its most magical.

FAQs

Should I paddle a single or tandem kayak?

Tandem kayaks are suggested if you have a member of your party who might not be able to/want to paddle the entire distance.

What should I NOT wear while paddling?

Boots, jeans, and cotton warm-up bottoms such as sweats are NOT ALLOWED as they become easily saturated and make for unsafe paddling.

Do I need to be an experienced paddler?

Not at all! This tour is perfect for all ages and experience levels.

Can my trip be canceled due to weather?

Mother Nature is unpredictable! If there are strong winds on the day your tour is scheduled, we may be able move your tour to a more protected location on the lake or reschedule your tour for another day. Your safety is our primary concern so if there are dangerous paddling conditions, we will cancel and issue a refund.

What information do I need to provide when I register for a trip?

In order to match you with the kayak/board that fits each paddler, we will request the height and weight of each participant.

It is also vital that we know the paddling experience level of each participant and any relevant medical issues so we can ensure the comfort and the safety of each paddler in a group.

You'll have the opportunity to enter all information at checkout.

Where is Somers Bay located?

Somers Bay is located 4.5 miles north of Lakeside, Montana, at the north end of Flathead Lake. For this two-hour guided kayak tour, guests meet and launch directly from the Somers Bay boat launch. The launch site is approximately 20–25 minutes from Kalispell, 45–50 minutes from Whitefish, and about 1 to 1.25 hours from Glacier National Park, making it an easy addition to a Flathead Valley or Glacier-area itinerary.
