La Paz Whale Shark Snorkeling Tour with MeXplore

Join a once-in-a-lifetime snorkeling adventure in La Paz and experience the awe of swimming alongside the ocean’s largest fish—the gentle and majestic whale shark. La Paz is one of the few places in the world where you can observe these incredible creatures in a responsible, eco-conscious manner, thanks to strict conservation regulations that ensure their protection year after year.

A short boat ride into La Paz Bay will bring you face-to-face with these filter-feeding giants. With a certified marine biologist guiding your experience, you’ll gain fascinating insights into their behavior, habitat, and conservation efforts. To provide an intimate and respectful wildlife encounter, we keep our groups small—no more than nine guests per boat—allowing for a more personal and immersive experience.

La Paz is recognized as one of the top three destinations in the world for whale shark snorkeling, making this adventure a must for nature lovers and ocean enthusiasts alike.

Location

This tour meets at the dock at the La Paz marina, the exact location will be provided upon booking.

Seasonality

This whale shark snorkeling tour operates during the official whale shark season, which typically runs from November through April, when these magnificent creatures visit La Paz Bay.

Duration

This excursion lasts approximately 3 hours, with about 2 hours on the water spent snorkeling and observing the whale sharks.
Typically two tours are available each day - 9am and 12pm.
The best time of day is typically morning, as the water conditions are calmer, visibility is clearer, and marine life tends to be more active. Mornings also offer the best chance to avoid strong afternoon winds, which can create choppier waters. However, afternoon tours can still provide an incredible experience, especially on days with favorable weather conditions.

Difficulty Level

  1. Swimming Ability Required – Participants must be able to swim to safely enjoy this experience. While snorkeling experience is not required, it enhances the adventure. Our guides provide assistance and instruction to ensure comfort in the water.

  3. Stay Aboard Option – If you prefer to stay on the boat and observe without entering the water, you are welcome to do so!

    Important Info & Booking Policy

    1. Government Regulations & Scheduling:
The Mexican government regulates access to protect the whale sharks. Each day, only a limited number of boats are allowed, and we are assigned specific time slots for our tour. While we secure our preferred slot 95% of the time, there may be occasional schedule adjustments. Please keep your phone and email accessible for updates the day before your tour.
    1. Weather Conditions:
La Paz Bay experiences strong seasonal winds that may result in choppy waters. We monitor the forecast daily and will notify you 2–3 days in advance if conditions are unfavorable. If high winds prevent tours from operating, we recommend having a backup day in your itinerary to allow for rescheduling.
    1. Snorkeling, Not Freediving:
Federal regulations strictly prohibit freediving with the whale sharks. Only surface snorkeling is allowed to minimize stress on the animals and ensure sustainable tourism practices.

    FAQs

When is the best time for a snorkeling tour with whale sharks in La Paz?

The best time to snorkel with whale sharks in La Paz is from October to April, when these gentle giants migrate to the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez to feed on plankton.

Is it safe to swim with whale sharks in La Paz?

Yes! Whale sharks are harmless filter feeders that eat plankton and small fish. They pose no threat to humans, and guides ensure all interactions are respectful and follow conservation guidelines.

How close can snorkelers get to the whale sharks?

Regulations require snorkelers to maintain a safe distance of at least 3 meters (10 feet) from whale sharks. However, these massive creatures sometimes swim past snorkelers at close range, creating an unforgettable experience.

Do I need to be an experienced swimmer to snorkel with whale sharks in La Paz?

While basic swimming skills are recommended, the tour provides flotation devices such as life jackets and wetsuits to help less confident swimmers.

How long do you spend in the water with whale sharks?

Snorkelers typically spend several minutes at a time in the water, taking turns in small groups. The total time varies depending on the number of whale sharks present and local regulations.

What are the rules for responsible snorkeling?

Yes, to protect the marine ecosystem:

    • Keep a respectful distance from all marine life.
    • Do not touch, chase, or feed any animals.
    • Use reef-safe sunscreen to prevent pollution.
    • Follow all instructions from your guides.

    Is this snorkeling tour eco-friendly?

Yes! Ethical tour operators, such as MeXplore prioritize conservation, limit the number of snorkelers per trip, and follow strict guidelines to minimize human impact on marine life.

How does snorkeling with whale sharks contribute to conservation?

By choosing responsible tour operators, visitors help fund marine conservation projects and support local guides who promote sustainable tourism.

    Are whale shark sighting guaranteed?

Whale sharks are wild animals, and while they migrate to La Paz Bay seasonally, sightings can never be 100% guaranteed. However, this region is one of the most reliable places in the world to snorkel with whale sharks, and the likelihood of encountering them during the peak season (November–April) is extremely high. Our experienced guides and captains closely monitor whale shark activity and use local knowledge to find them efficiently. In the rare case that whale sharks are not present during your tour, you will still get to enjoy a scenic boat ride and may spot other marine life such as dolphins, rays, and sea turtles.

    Cancellation Policy

You can cancel your tour 7 days or more prior to the tour date, you will get a 100% refund.
If you cancel less than 7 days prior to the tour date, we can not give you a refund.
We strive to ensure that conditions are optimal before embarking on any tour. During a few days each year, mostly in winter, strong winds may lead to the harbor being closed to all activities. Should this happen, we'll contact you to find an alternative date for your scheduled tour.
