Snorkeling with Whale Sharks, Sea Lions & Playa Balandra

This unparalleled snorkeling adventure in the crystal-clear waters of La Paz offers a unique opportunity to swim with whale sharks, frolic with playful sea lions, and relax on the pristine sands of Balandra Beach, one of Mexico's most beautiful beaches.
Join us for a once-in-a-lifetime experience in La Paz and get up close with the ocean's biggest fish, known for their massive size and gentle nature. This is one of the few places in the world where you can enjoy whale sharks in a conscious and sustainable manner.  The Mexican government has established strict regulations that all tour operators follow to protect these gentle giants, aiming to welcome them back year after year.  Just a short ride into La Paz bay, you'll have the chance to snorkel and swim alongside these magnificent creatures, with guidance from a local marine biologist who's eager to fill you in on all the fascinating details about them. Check out TripOutside's Guide to Snorkeling with Whale Sharks in La Paz for more insight into this incredible eco-conscious tour.

After your unforgettable whale shark experience, the adventure continues with a visit to San Rafaelito Islet, where you'll snorkel alongside playful sea lions and explore a colorful coral reef teeming with marine life. Next, we’ll head to La Gaviota Island, a haven for bird lovers, where you may spot the striking Blue-footed booby (seasonal: August–November) along with other endemic seabirds that call this island home. To complete the journey, we'll arrive at Balandra Beach, one of Mexico’s most breathtaking and untouched coastal gems. Here, you’ll enjoy a delicious beachside lunch, relax on the soft white sand, take a refreshing swim in the shallow turquoise waters, or set out on a short scenic hike for panoramic views of this pristine bay.

Additional Information

  1. Government Regulations & Scheduling:
The Mexican government regulates access to protect the whale sharks. Each day, only a limited number of boats are allowed, and we are assigned specific time slots for our tour. While we secure our preferred slot 95% of the time, there may be occasional schedule adjustments. Please keep your phone and email accessible for updates the day before your tour.
  1. Weather Conditions:
La Paz Bay experiences strong seasonal winds that may result in choppy waters. We monitor the forecast daily and will notify you 2–3 days in advance if conditions are unfavorable. If high winds prevent tours from operating, we recommend having a backup day in your itinerary to allow for rescheduling.
  1. Snorkeling, Not Freediving:
Federal regulations strictly prohibit freediving with the whale sharks. Only surface snorkeling is allowed to minimize stress on the animals and ensure sustainable tourism practices.

How close can snorkelers get to the whale sharks?

Regulations require snorkelers to maintain a safe distance of at least 3 meters (10 feet) from whale sharks. However, these massive creatures sometimes swim past snorkelers at close range, creating an unforgettable experience.

Do I need to be an experienced swimmer to snorkel with whale sharks in La Paz?

While basic swimming skills are recommended, the tour provides flotation devices such as life jackets and wetsuits to help less confident swimmers.

No, touching marine life is strictly prohibited to protect both the animals and snorkelers. Observing from a respectful distance ensures a safe and responsible experience.

What should I do if a sea lion approaches me on a snorkeling tour?

What is Playa Balandra, and why is it included in the snorkeling tour?

Playa Balandra is one of Mexico’s most beautiful beaches, famous for its shallow turquoise waters, white sand dunes, and the iconic Mushroom Rock (El Hongo). It’s a perfect place to relax and snorkel in calm waters after the open-water experience with whale sharks and sea lions.
