Description

Learn to Snorkel While Discovering Maui's Incredible Underwater World!

Discover Maui’s underwater world in a relaxed, beginner-friendly way on this fully guided shore snorkel designed specifically for non-swimmers and first-time snorkelers. Starting directly from the calm shoreline at Wailea Beach, this experience focuses on comfort, confidence, and fun—making it possible for guests with little or no ocean experience to safely enjoy snorkeling alongside Hawaiian green sea turtles and colorful reef life.
Your guide begins with one-on-one instruction in shallow water where you can stand comfortably while learning how to breathe through a snorkel, float on the surface, and use your mask and fins. Life jackets are provided for all participants, and a large inflatable paddleboard stays with the group the entire time, offering a secure floating platform to rest on or observe the reef from whenever needed. The pace is completely relaxed, and your guide stays close throughout the experience.
Once everyone feels ready, the group gradually makes its way toward the reef at Wailea Point, one of South Maui’s most beautiful shoreline snorkeling areas. There, you may encounter Hawaiian green sea turtles (Honu), tropical fish, rays, eels, octopus, and other marine life that thrive along the coral reef. Guests can choose their own comfort level the entire time—whether that means floating on the surface, snorkeling beside the board, or exploring more actively near the reef.
This experience is designed to remove the pressure and intimidation that many people feel about snorkeling for the first time. Families, older guests, nervous swimmers, and complete beginners are all welcome, and the calm, supportive environment makes it easy to simply enjoy being in the ocean. Optional GoPro rentals and photo/video packages are available if you’d like to capture the experience!

Please enjoy their company if they approach from a distance and calmly move away from them if in their path. Please also be respectful of the fact that coral is a living organism and any standing, touching, or knocking over will irreparably damage the organism that takes a very long time to grow and is essential to our marine reefs.

FAQs

Are your guides certified?

Yes — all guides are CPR-certified and experienced locals with deep knowledge of Maui's reefs, marine life, and Hawaiian culture. They are trained to support guests of all ability levels and comfort levels in the water.

What marine life can I see when snorkeling at Wailea and Makena reefs?

Maui's south shore reefs are home to Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu), spotted eagle rays, moray eels, octopus, starfish, and a wide variety of colorful reef fish including butterfly fish, triggerfish, and parrotfish. Dolphin sightings, while not guaranteed, have also been reported by guests.

When is the best time to snorkel in Maui?

Snorkeling conditions are generally good year-round in Maui. Morning tours tend to have the calmest water and best visibility. Summer months (May–September) typically offer the flattest conditions, while winter swells (November–March) can occasionally affect certain spots. Guides monitor conditions daily and will move locations or reschedule if needed.

Can I snorkel with a mustache or beard?

You can snorkel with a beard or mustache, but facial hair can prevent a tight seal between the mask and your face, which may cause water to leak in. It is often recommended to shave at least your mustache before going out. If you'd prefer not to shave, bring petroleum jelly or chapstick — coating your mustache can help create a better seal and prevent water from getting in.

Can I wear glasses or contacts while snorkeling?

You can't wear glasses with a snorkel mask, but contacts are totally fine and often the best option for seeing clearly underwater. If you have a prescription mask, feel free to bring it — rental shops typically don't carry them. Fun fact: everything appears about 25% larger and closer underwater, which helps visibility a bit even without correction.

What sunscreen can I use and why does it matter?

Common sunscreens contain chemicals — including oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens — that can harm coral reefs, as the particles are small enough to be absorbed by corals, causing toxicity and bleaching. Please use reef-safe sunscreen. Reef-SAFE sunscreens go a step further by using non-nano particles, which are too large for corals to ingest. Consider wearing a long-sleeve rash guard as an alternative to sunscreen. If you choose a mineral-based sunscreen, ensure it is labeled 'non-nano.'

Do I need to know how to swim to join this tour?

No — this tour is designed specifically for non-swimmers and first-timers. You'll wear a life jacket the entire time and have a large inflatable surfboard nearby for support. Your guide stays with you the whole time and goes at your pace. No swimming experience is required.

What if I feel nervous once I'm in the water?

Your guide will be right beside you throughout the tour. There is no pressure to go further than you are comfortable with. The big surfboard is always available to rest on, and many guests find they gain confidence quickly once they realize how calm and supported the experience is.

Can guests with special needs join?

Yes. We adjust the pace and support for every guest, including those with limited mobility or anxiety.
