Description

Shoup Glacier Sea Kayak Day Tour

Kayak & hike to a stunning tidewater glacier as you step into the remote beauty of Shoup Bay State Marine Park on this full-day sea kayaking adventure. The Shoup Glacier Day Tour is perfect for those seeking a quieter, more intimate paddling experience away from the crowds—while still enjoying some of the most scenic landscapes Valdez has to offer.
Your adventure begins with a scenic motorboat ride along the rugged coastline of Prince William Sound. Keep your eyes peeled for sea otters, harbor seals, and bald eagles as we cruise toward Shoup Bay—a glacial fjord carved by the retreating Shoup Glacier.
Once we arrive in the bay, your guide will provide a safety briefing and paddling orientation before we launch our kayaks. You’ll paddle beneath towering cliffs, past cascading waterfalls, and alongside a bird colony of black-legged kittiwakes. The protected waters of Shoup Bay make for ideal conditions, even for those with little to no kayaking experience.
As we paddle deeper into the fjord, we’ll approach the face of the Shoup Glacier, a dramatic wall of ancient ice that feeds the surrounding bay with floating chunks of blue-hued ice. We'll beach the kayaks and take a short walk to enjoy lunch with an unforgettable view of the glacier. Along the shoreline, your guide will share stories of glacial retreat, local geology, and the unique ecology of this pristine wilderness.
After soaking in the solitude and beauty of Shoup Bay, we’ll paddle back to our pickup point, where the motorboat will be waiting to whisk us back to Valdez.

How much time do we spend kayaking?

The time spent paddling can vary depending on how much wildlife we encounter and slow down while on board the water taxi.

Do I need previous experience?

No prior experience is necessary. This tour is suitable for adventurous beginners and seasoned paddlers alike. Your guide will provide a thorough orientation before launching.

What kind of kayaks will we use?

We use stable, double (tandem) sea kayaks for this trip. These are ideal for long distances, variable conditions, and accommodating paddlers of all experience levels.

Will I see the glacier up close?

You’ll paddle among the icebergs at the glacier’s outer moraine and get impressive views of the glacier face, but due to safety concerns, we maintain a safe distance from actively calving ice.

What wildlife might I see?

Shoup Bay is home to seabirds like black-legged kittiwakes, bald eagles, harbor seals, sea otters, and occasionally bears along the shoreline.

What if the weather is bad?

Tours operate rain or shine, and Alaska’s coastal weather can be unpredictable. Your guides will assess conditions for safety and adjust the itinerary if needed. In rare cases of severe weather, the trip may be rescheduled or refunded.

How cold is the water?

Prince William Sound’s water is very cold year-round, usually around 40–50°F (4–10°C). That’s why we provide all necessary gear, including splash skirts and PFDs (life jackets), to keep you safe and comfortable.
