Description

Short Exploratory Day Hike in Durango - Private Tour

Want a hiking experience that's totally tailored to your group’s pace, preferences, and fitness level? Our Private Durango Exploratory Hike is perfect for families, friend groups, or solo travelers who want a more personalized experience on the trail. We'll take care of the planning—based on whether you'd prefer forest paths, desert views, or unique rock formations—so you can just enjoy the journey.
This 1.5–2 hour hike is a great way to get out in nature without committing to a big adventure, and our guides can easily modify the route on the fly. Whether you want to stop often for photos, learn about local plants, or keep a steady pace, we’ll design the hike to suit your style. Water refills and a variety of snacks are provided, and your WFR-certified guide is there to ensure both safety and enjoyment from trailhead to finish.

Duration

1.5-2 hours

Location / Where to Meet

We'll provide transportation to and from your lodging (within 5 miles of Durango’s city center). If you are staying farther outside of town we will establish a spot to meet and transport you from there, or we can meet at the trailhead. We'll be in touch in advance of the tour to establish a meeting point.

Ages & Requirements

This is a great beginner-friendly and family-friendly hiking tour in Durango, and recommended to anyone looking for short outing on the local trails.
There is no minimum age for private tours; we recommend reserving a private tour if your children are under 5 years old or if anyone in your party requires a slower pace. These can be adjusted to suit your family's pace and needs. Guests under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. For little ones, we recommend bringing a child carrier pack.

What's Included

  1. Use of our Osprey Daylite Plus backpacks (20L volume)
  2. Use of our adjustable trekking poles
  3. Snacks: Guides will provide a variety of snacks for guests to pack into their daypacks at the trailhead if they would like.
  4. Transportation to and from your lodging (within 5 miles of Durango’s city center) or an established meeting location
  5. A medically trained and well experienced hiking guide, aware of local dangers and how to mitigate them, who is excited to share their passion for the outdoors with you; as well as their favorite places to eat in town!

What's Not Included

  1. Rain jacket and a variety of layers
  2. Appropriate footwear
  3. Lodging
  4. Personalized Snacks
  5. Trip and Medical Insurance
  6. Water bottles/water badders (ability to carry 1 liter is required)
  7. Guide Gratuity

What to Bring

  1. Rain Jacket (even if the weather calls for pure sunshine, that isn’t always accurate and it can change quickly here)
  2. A variety of clothing layers to adjust to speed of movement and varying weather conditions that will likely occur. Athletic clothing is preferred.
  3. A hat to protect from the intense Colorado sun
  4. Sunglasses
  5. Long sleeve sunshirt (not required, but definitely recommended for this environment)
  6. Sunscreen
  7. Your all-time favorite trail snacks
  8. 1-2 liters of water. 1 liter required, 2 liters highly recommended. (We will have a large water jug in the vehicle to top up water bottles at the trailhead.)
  9. Appropriate footwear: Most of the trails we explore have a wide variety of terrain and exposure to cacti. For this reason we highly recommend closed-toed shoes/hiking boots, and footwear with quality traction. (Flip-flops are not allowed and sandals are discouraged)

FAQs

Which trails are best for a short hike in Durango?

We have access to a variety of trail options including Horse Gulch, Overend Mountain Park, Twin Buttes, and Dalla Mountain Park. All of these trails are between 6,600 and 7,400ft in elevation, which for many traveling from out of town is great for acclimatization compared to the high elevation trails around 10,000ft! This makes for a great adventure earlier on in your trip before you go exploring in the big mountains near

  • Horse Gulch - A local favorite with gradual ascents and open meadows. Great for panoramic views and a “just outside of town” feel.
  • Overend Mountain Park - Twisty trails, shaded forest, and short, steep ups and downs make this network fun and engaging. Ideal for those who want variety without committing to a long-distance hike.
  • Twin Buttes - Offers a bit more elevation gain and wide-open views of the La Plata Mountains. Expect switchbacks, ponderosa forests, and occasional wildlife sightings.
  • Dalla Mountain Park - Known for its granite rock features and beautiful pine forests, Dalla is a quieter zone with a more backcountry feel—great for hikers who want a peaceful nature fix.

Your guide will work with you and your group to choose the appropriate trail for your desires and ability levels!

How difficuly is this Durango day hike?

The hike is customizable! Most routes are suitable for anyone with moderate fitness and can be adjusted based on your group’s pace and ability.

How does tipping work with these tours?

Guides put a lot of work into preparing your tour, running it safely, and doing their best to make your smile large and send you home with great memories; and then clean and store gear. Gratuity is not expected, but it is greatly appreciated. If you thought your guide did a great job keeping you safe, teaching you about the area and accommodating your needs, gratuities usually range between 15-20% of the tour price.

What happens if it's raining?

Tours will operate rain or shine, as long as our guides deem the conditions are safe.

What's the difference between a private tour and a mixed group tour?

Private Tour vs. Mixed Group Tour

  • Private Tours are tailored specifically to your group’s interests, fitness level, and pace. Your guide can make real-time adjustments to the route, and there’s no need to accommodate other groups’ pickup or drop-off locations. It’s a personalized, seamless experience from start to finish—perfect for families, special occasions, or anyone wanting a custom adventure.
  • Mixed Group Tours are a shared experience with other adventurers. They’re a great way to meet like-minded people and are more budget-friendly. However, the itinerary and pace are set to suit the whole group.

We love offering both options, but we generally recommend Private Tours for the best flexibility and overall experience.

What is the guest-guide ratio?

Meraki’s 6:1 Guest to Guide ratio allows us to provide proper care and attention to each guest and support them in pushing their unique limits. For those looking for an exceptionally chill experience it also allows us to lavish in good stories and top food recommendations.

Are your guides certified?

All Meraki guides have an active Wilderness First Responder medical certification. This 80-hour wilderness medical course covers a wide variety of situations and issues that could happen in the outdoors and how to manage them professionally. Our rock climbing guides are also certified by the Professional Climbing Guides Institute. All Meraki guides carry a comprehensive first aid kit, as well as a Garmin inReach satellite communication device for when cell service is spotty.

Do you provide food or snacks?

The essential fuel of a good adventure! We pride ourselves on having good (mostly organic) food and good snacks on our trips. Any tour that is over 3 hours in length will have a mostly organic with local ingredients, gourmet sandwich from our Durango Natural Foods Co-op. We care about the quality of nutrition that goes into our bodies, and we share that same standard for our guests. Be sure to check the inclusions and exclusions above for what's included in your tour.

Can I join a tour as a solo guest?

Yes! Solo travelers are always welcome. You can join one of our mixed group tours, which are a fun and social way to experience the outdoors with other like-minded adventurers.

Prefer a more personalized experience? You can also book a private tour as a solo guest, with one-on-one attention from your guide. Either way, we’re happy to accommodate and help you make the most of your time outside!
