FAQs
Is this a shore snorkel or a boat snorkel?
This is a shoreline snorkel — you enter directly from Olowalu Beach. There is no boat involved. The reef is accessible by walking/wading in from shore, and the shallow, calm conditions make this ideal for beginners and families.
What is the Turtle Cleaning Station?
The Turtle Cleaning Station is a specific section of Olowalu Reef where Hawaiian green sea turtles congregate daily to be cleaned by small "cleaner" fish. The fish remove parasites and algae from the turtles' shells, flippers, heads, and undersides. Dozens of turtles can be found there at one time — it's one of the most consistently extraordinary natural behaviors you can witness on Maui, and your guide knows exactly where to find it.
Is this tour appropriate for non-swimmers or people nervous in the water?
Yes. Life jackets and flotation devices are provided for everyone, and your guide will go at your pace. First-time snorkelers and non-swimmers are explicitly welcomed — guides are patient and experienced with guests of all comfort levels. The shallow, calm conditions at Olowalu are particularly well-suited for those who are nervous in open water.
What marine life can I expect to see when snorkeling at Olowalu Reef?
Olowalu Reef is known for its Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu), ancient coral formations, and hundreds of tropical reef fish including butterflyfish, parrotfish, Moorish idols, surgeonfish, and trumpetfish. The Turtle Cleaning Station is a consistent highlight — turtles gather there daily in numbers that can reach into the dozens. Spinner dolphins and reef sharks are occasional sightings, and from December through May, humpback whales can sometimes be seen or heard from the water's surface.
When is the best time to snorkel at Olowalu?
April through October offers the calmest seas and best visibility. Early morning tours have the most settled conditions. Sea turtle encounters are extremely common year-round, and humpback whale activity in the nearby sanctuary is possible December through May.
Are the guides certified?
Yes. Your lead guide is a certified Divemaster and Hawaii Marine Naturalist with American Red Cross CPR, First Aid, and Lifeguard credentials, and over 21 years of experience guiding in these exact waters.
What sunscreen can I use and why does it matter?
Common sunscreens contain chemicals that can harm coral reefs, as the particles are small enough to be absorbed by corals, causing toxicity and coral bleaching. Reef-SAFE sunscreens use non-nano mineral particles that are too large for corals to ingest. Please avoid oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens. Consider wearing a long-sleeve rash guard. If you use a mineral sunscreen, ensure it is labeled "non-nano."
Can I snorkel with a mustache or beard?
Facial hair can prevent a watertight seal on your mask. It's often recommended to shave at least your mustache before snorkeling. If you prefer not to shave, bring petroleum jelly or chapstick to coat your mustache — this can help create a better seal.
Can I wear glasses or contacts?
Glasses cannot be worn under a snorkel mask, but contacts work perfectly. If you have a prescription mask, bring it — rental shops typically don't carry them. Everything underwater appears about 25% larger and closer, which helps even without full correction.
