Description

Tsé Bit’a’í - Shiprock Peak - Sacred Landmark & Cultural Exploration

Visit Tsé Bit’a’í (Shiprock Peak), a majestic volcanic monolith rising from the high desert of northwest New Mexico. This iconic landmark is renowned for its striking silhouette, panoramic vistas, and deep cultural significance to the Navajo people. On this guided tour, you’ll experience the beauty and history of Shiprock through a combination of vehicle travel and short walking segments, learning about its geology, photography potential, and sacred heritage.
The tour includes multiple stops along dirt roads and designated areas where you can explore on foot, capturing views of the peak from carefully chosen vantage points. Total walking distance is approximately 3.2 kilometers (2 miles) over relatively gentle terrain, combined with 14.5 kilometers (9 miles) of driving in your vehicle. Guides ensure the experience is immersive, educational, and respectful, emphasizing that hiking or climbing on the peak itself is strictly forbidden, as it is sacred to the Navajo Nation.
Your Indigenous guides share stories of local history, culture, and photography tips, providing insight into the land’s significance and offering unique perspectives on this iconic landscape. Small group sizes allow for personal attention, relaxed pacing, and ample opportunities to photograph the peak and surrounding desert vistas.

Location / Where to Meet

Meet your guide at the intersection of Route 13 and Route 5010, off US 64 / Highway 491, near Shiprock, NM. You will follow the guide in your own high-clearance vehicle (intermediate SUV or larger).
Optional Transportation Service: The guide will direct you to park at a designated area, then provide transportation to and from tour stops.
Please ensure your vehicle is fully fueled. This is a remote desert location with no services at the trailhead, so plan ahead before arriving. If you're coming from Santa Fe, Taos, or Albuquerque, the most direct route is typically via Cuba, which is the last reliable stop for gas, food, and supplies (approximately 3.5 hours from Santa Fe, 4 hours from Taos, and 2.5 hours from Albuquerque, with about 1.5 hours remaining to the trailhead). If you choose to route through Farmington instead, you’ll find full services there about 1 hour from the trailhead. The closest community is Shiprock (~20 minutes away), while Nageezi is roughly 1.5 hours away; services are limited, with only a single gas station. Cell service is spotty to nonexistent in the area, so download directions in advance and arrive fully prepared.
