Description

Clear Kayak Tour of Shell Key Preserve near St. Pete Beach, Tampa

Discover one of Florida's most pristine coastal ecosystems on this guided clear kayak eco-tour through Shell Key Preserve, just off St. Pete Beach in the Tampa Bay area. Rated the #1 Nature & Outdoor Activity in the World by TripAdvisor, this experience combines breathtaking natural beauty with expert-led education aboard a 100% see-through kayak.
You'll launch from Tierra Verde and paddle alongside mangrove-lined islands, across clear shallow flats, and out toward the white sand beaches and sandbars of Shell Key — a pristine barrier island accessible only by water. As the water clears closer to the Gulf of Mexico, look down through your kayak for a window into the underwater world below: seagrass beds, crabs, fish, and rays gliding along the sandy bottom.
Your knowledgeable eco-guide will lead the way through the mangrove channels (including a hidden mangrove tunnel at high tide), narrating the ecology, marine biology, and natural history of the preserve the entire way. You'll take a beach break at Shell Key where you can collect seashells, take in the views, and soak up the Florida sun. With a maximum of 10 paddlers per tour, this is an intimate, unhurried adventure that gives you the best of the Gulf Coast.

Shell Key Preserve is home to a remarkable diversity of coastal and marine wildlife. Please respect all wildlife and ecosystems you encounter on tour. Coral and seagrass are living organisms — avoid standing, touching, or disturbing them. Never chase, harass, feed, or touch any marine animals, including dolphins, manatees, stingrays, sea turtles, birds, or fish. FAQs

What is a clear kayak and why does it make a difference?

Our kayaks are made from 100% transparent polycarbonate, giving you an unobstructed view straight through the hull to the water below. As you paddle over seagrass beds, sandy flats, and shallow mangrove channels, you'll see fish, rays, crabs, and other marine life directly under your seat — no snorkeling required. The less gear you bring inside the kayak, the better your view!

What wildlife can I see when kayaking at Shell Key Preserve?

Shell Key is a wildlife-rich coastal estuary. Year-round you may spot dolphins, cormorants, brown pelicans, a wide variety of fish, and crabs along the sandy bottom. Summer is the best time to see manatees and the vivid pink Roseate Spoonbill. In winter, White Pelicans roost along the sandbars. Stingrays are commonly seen gliding beneath the kayaks. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but your expert guide will know exactly where to look.

When is the best time to kayak at Shell Key Preserve?

Shell Key is beautiful year-round. If you're hoping to see manatees and Roseate Spoonbills, plan a summer visit. For White Pelicans on the sandbars, winter is ideal. Dolphins and cormorants are present throughout the year. Morning tours tend to have calmer water and wildlife activity, while afternoon tours offer beautiful light for photos.

Is this tour suitable for beginners?

Absolutely. No prior kayaking experience is needed — your guide will walk you through paddling basics before you launch. The waters of Shell Key Preserve are generally calm and sheltered, making it a great introduction to kayaking. Guests should have basic upper-body mobility and be able to walk up and down a few steps to enter and exit the kayak.

Can I take photos on the tour?

Yes! Your guide will happily help take photos throughout the tour. If you bring your own waterproof camera or phone case, you'll have plenty of incredible opportunities to capture the wildlife, clear water, and scenery. The outfitter is not responsible for any damaged or lost items.

What is the Shell Key Preserve and who can access it?

Shell Key Preserve is a 1,800-acre protected barrier island and estuary managed by Pinellas County. It is only accessible by water — no bridges or roads lead to it. Booking a guided tour guarantees your spot and ensures you'll access this special place safely and responsibly.

How far do we paddle and is it strenuous?

The tour covers a leisurely paddle through the preserve's channels, mangroves, and out to Shell Key beach — your guide sets a comfortable pace for the whole group. The paddling can be mildly intermediate depending on wind and tidal conditions, but guides adjust the route accordingly. If you have mobility concerns, please reach out before booking.

Are there shells to collect at Shell Key?

Yes! Shell Key Preserve is renowned for its abundance of seashells along the beach. Your beach break gives you time to explore the shoreline and collect shells at your leisure. Guides can share fascinating facts about the mollusks that create them — one guide favorite: all that white quartz sand didn't originate in Florida; it eroded from the Appalachian Mountains through river systems over thousands of years.

What are some kayak safety tips for beginners?

Your guide will cover safety before launching, but here are some general tips: Always wear your provided life jacket. Stay with the group and follow your guide's directions. Keep your gear minimal to maintain clear visibility through the kayak. If conditions change (wind, current), your guide will adjust the route. If you feel tired or unwell on the water, let your guide know immediately.

What are the kayak weight limits?

The weight limit is 250 lbs (113 kg) per person and no more than 425 lbs (193 kg) per boat (two paddlers combined). These limits are set by the kayak manufacturer and cannot be exceeded for safety reasons.

Are the kayaks tandem or solo?

All kayaks are tandem (two paddlers). Seats are removable, so solo paddling can be accommodated for groups with an odd number of participants — the same 250 lb (113 kg) per-person limit still applies.

Are pets allowed?

Pets are prohibited throughout Shell Key Preserve by order of Pinellas County Government. Guests traveling with a service animal should contact the team directly prior to booking.

What items are prohibited on tour?

Prohibited items include disposable containers (cans, plastic, glass, foam, paper), alcoholic beverages, oil-based sunscreens and lotions, tobacco products, and audio speakers.

Are waivers required?

Yes. You will receive a separate email with a link to complete your waiver (subject: 'Action required for your kayak tour'). Please sign before arriving to save time on the day of your tour.

Does the outfitter support conservation?

Yes — the team is passionate about the environment and conservation, donating a portion of proceeds to Florida Land & Springs Conservation. Guides are trained in responsible wildlife viewing, particularly regarding manatees (Guardian Guide certified by Save the Manatee Club).
