Description
Ride Maui's Famous 29 Switchbacks at Your Own Pace!
Trade crowded tour groups for the freedom to experience Haleakalā on your own schedule. This self-paced downhill bike adventure lets you enjoy one of Maui's most iconic rides while stopping whenever the scenery, fresh mountain air, or charming Upcountry towns invite you to slow down. With sweeping bi-coastal views, cool volcanic slopes, and miles of downhill riding ahead, it's an unforgettable way to experience a side of Maui many visitors never see.
Your day begins with a scenic drive up the mountain, where you'll be outfitted with your bike and safety gear before starting the descent from approximately 6,500 ft (1,981 m). From there, you'll cruise through the famous 29 Haleakalā switchbacks, rolling ranchlands, and eucalyptus forests while enjoying nearly continuous downhill riding. Along the route you'll travel through the Upcountry community of Kula, spend time exploring the historic paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) town of Makawao, and continue toward the North Shore through pineapple fields, colorful flowering trees, and quiet country roads before finishing in Pāʻia.
Covering approximately 26 miles (42 km), this is one of Maui's longest self-paced downhill cycling experiences. Although the ride requires very little pedaling, it is not simply a leisurely cruise. Riders descend public roads shared with vehicle traffic, often without dedicated bike lanes, on grades averaging 5–6% while navigating winding mountain roads. Guests should be comfortable riding a bicycle with hand brakes and confident sharing the road with vehicles. The reward is an incredible journey from the slopes of Haleakalā to the sea, experienced entirely at your own pace.

FAQs
What do I wear for the bike self-guided tour?
You can wear anything that will make you feel comfortable. However, closed-toed shoes and helmets are the only mandatory attire. Gloves, windbreakers, and windproof pants are highly recommended. Keep in mind that the temperatures in the early morning can be quite brisk and, when combined with the downhill speeds, you may find it chilly.
Jackets, sweatshirts, jeans, leggings, long-sleeved shirts, and the like are all safe options. Dressing in layers is always a good idea.
Check the weather before your tour and dress accordingly.
Do I need my own bike? What should I bring?
For your Haleakala self-guided bike tour, Mountain Riders will provide you a Workmen’s Volcano Chrome Cruiser bike to use, as well as a full-face helmet. Therefore, you just need to bring your sunglasses, sunscreen, snack, water, or anything you think you may need. Remember, whatever you bring, you will have to carry with you – and you need to be able to properly handle your bike.
Who is the Haleakala self-guided bike tour designed for?
Anyone confident bike riders who are looking for the adventure of a lifetime will benefit from this self-guided mountain tour – as long as they meet the restrictions. Life is short and unforgettable experiences can take the ordinary and make it extraordinary. Any Haleakala mountain tour will prove to be very rewarding and a lot of fun.
How dangerous is the Haleakala self-guided bike tour?
As with any type of adventure sport, there is going to be some danger and risk involved. After all, you will be riding your bike downhill – and a lot can happen if you aren’t careful. However, if you are a seasoned bike rider who is comfortable riding at a fast, downhill pace alongside automobiles, then you should be just fine.
When trying to determine if this is the right adventure for your Hawaiian getaway, consider how well you would handle the following:
- Sharing the roadway with cars, trucks, and other motor vehicles
- Traveling downhill at an average gradient of 5-6%
- Roads with switchbacks and winding curves
- Some stretches of the road with no bike lane or shoulder
Do I need previous biking experience to join this tour?
Yes. Riders should have prior experience riding a bicycle downhill, since the ride includes an average grade of 5–6% along with switchbacks, winding roads, and stretches with no bike lane or shoulder. You'll need to feel confident controlling your bike alongside other vehicles.
What makes this tour self-guided?
You ride the switchbacks at your own pace and stop whenever you like, rather than following a set group speed. Van transportation, the safety briefing, and gear fitting are still provided just like the guided tours.
How does timing work since the ride is self-paced?
Because riders move at their own speed, total time on the bike can vary — the tour's overall 4-hour estimate accounts for typical pacing, but your actual ride may run shorter or longer depending on how much you stop to take in the views.
