Description

Sea Kayaking Rescue and Recovery Course in Seattle, Washington

Every sea kayaker should be comfortable with self-rescue — full stop. The Sea Kayaking Rescue and Recovery course at Alki Kayak Tours teaches you exactly what to do if the unexpected happens: a capsize, an unforeseen obstacle, or simply the need to re-enter your boat in open water.

This hands-on 2-hour class covers the finer points of bracing to prevent a capsize in the first place, and then gets into the real-world skills for when prevention is not enough: assisted rescue, deploying paddle floats, and the full self-rescue process for getting back into your kayak in cold water conditions.

This is a cold water immersion class — bring or borrow a wetsuit. Class sizes are limited to 5 participants so everyone gets meaningful hands-on time. If you own a kayak, bring it. The skills taught here are required before taking any advanced sea kayak touring courses at Alki Kayak Tours.

FAQs

Is this class required before other courses?

The Rescue and Recovery skills are required before participating in advanced sea kayak touring courses at Alki Kayak Tours. It is strongly recommended for anyone planning to rent single sea kayaks independently.

Do I need to know how to kayak first?

Basic paddling familiarity is helpful. Completing the Introduction to Sea Kayaking class first is recommended before this course.

Why is a wetsuit required?

This class involves deliberate cold water immersion. Elliott Bay water temperatures are cold year-round, and a wetsuit is essential for safety and comfort during the rescue practice portions of the class.

Can I bring my own kayak?

Yes, and it is encouraged. Practicing rescue and re-entry in your own boat makes the skills more applicable to your real paddling conditions.

What is the maximum class size?

Class sizes are limited to 5 participants to ensure everyone gets adequate hands-on instruction time.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancellations more than 24 hours in advance incur a $10 fee. Cancellations within 24 hours receive no refund.
