FAQs
What can I see on the snorkel tour?
San Juan’s waters are home to a diverse array of marine life, making for an exciting snorkeling experience. You can expect to see colorful tropical fish such as angelfish, butterflyfish, and parrotfish darting through the coral reefs. Green sea turtles are commonly spotted gliding gracefully through the water, while schools of silvery fish move in unison. The coral formations themselves are full of life, providing shelter for hidden creatures like eels, sea stars, and small crustaceans. Depending on the season, you might also encounter stingrays resting on the sandy seafloor or even an occasional octopus camouflaged among the rocks.
Why should I go with a guide instead of snorkeling on my own?
A guided snorkel tour ensures you get the most out of your experience while staying safe. Local guides know the best spots to see marine life and will lead you to areas with the clearest visibility and healthiest reefs. They also provide important safety instructions, help beginners get comfortable with their gear, and point out hidden sea creatures you might otherwise miss. Additionally, snorkeling with a guide reduces the risk of getting caught in unexpected currents or venturing into restricted areas. With expert guidance, you can focus on enjoying the beauty of the underwater world without worrying about logistics or safety concerns.
Are there sharks?
Shark incidents in Puerto Rico’s waters are extremely rare, and serious injuries are even rarer. When you enter the ocean, it’s important to remember that it’s a natural, wild environment with many types of marine life, including sharks. Although the chances of a shark-related injury are very low, they are still part of the ocean’s ecosystem, and the ocean should be approached with respect. By learning about sharks and following safety guidelines, you can minimize even this small risk.
Can you go underwater with a snorkel?
Yes, snorkels allow you to breathe with your face in the water at the surface. If you’d like to dive down, though, water will enter the snorkel, so you’ll need to hold your breath until you resurface. Once back at the surface, you can clear the snorkel by blowing out the air in your mouth hard. That should clear the snorkel, but if it doesn’t, tread the water, remove the snorkel from your mouth and dump the mouthpiece out.
Can I snorkel if I wear glasses?
Standard eyeglasses can’t be worn with a snorkel mask, but prescription masks are available for those who need vision correction while snorkeling. If you’re interested, just be sure to rent one from a dive shop ahead of time. The tour doesn’t supply prescription masks on site. Alternatively, contact lenses can be worn under a snorkel mask, though it’s best to close your eyes if water enters to prevent losing a lens.
What sunscreen can I use and why does it matter?
Common sunscreens contain chemicals that can harm coral reefs, as the particles are small enough to be absorbed by corals, causing toxicity and coral bleaching. Reef-friendly sunscreens are formulated without these harmful chemicals. Reef-SAFE sunscreens go a step further by using non-nano particles, which are too large for corals to ingest, helping to preserve marine ecosystems.
Please avoid sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens. Consider wearing sun-protective clothing, like long-sleeve rash guards, as an alternative to sunscreen. If you choose a mineral-based sunscreen, ensure it is labeled ‘non-nano.’
Where do we snorkel in San Juan on this tour?
You’ll explore the reefs at Escambron Marine Park, just a few minutes from Old San Juan. It’s a protected cove with calm waters and tons of marine life.
Do I need snorkeling experience for this tour?
No experience needed! Whether it’s your first time or your fiftieth, the guides are there to help you get comfortable and make the most of the adventure.
Is Escambron Marine Park a good spot for beginner snorkelers?
Definitely. Escambron has protected waters, sandy entry points, and shallow reefs that are awesome for beginners getting their fins under them.
What is the best time of day for snorkeling in San Juan?
Morning tours usually offer the clearest visibility and calmer waters, but honestly, the reef here is gorgeous any time you hit the water.
