Description

Salt River Bay National Park Day Kayak Tour with Beach Stop!

Explore the natural beauty and layered history of St. Croix on this guided daytime kayak tour through Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve. Paddling stable sit-on-top ocean kayaks, you’ll travel through multiple protected bays within this 1,000-acre (405 ha) national park, where mangrove forests, Caribbean wildlife, and important cultural history all come together in one unforgettable setting.
As you paddle, your guide will help you identify the different types of mangrove forest that line the bay and point out wildlife along the way. Keep an eye out for snowy egrets, great blue herons, brown pelicans, iguanas sunning in the branches, and Cassiopeia jellyfish pulsing gently in the shallow breeding areas. The tour also passes near the historic location where Columbus and his fleet anchored in 1493, adding a fascinating cultural layer to the experience.
Midway through the tour, you’ll stop at a sandy beach where you can relax, search for shells, feel the sand between your toes, or try out your snorkel gear in the clear Caribbean shallows. No kayaking experience is needed—these sit-on-top ocean kayaks are wide, stable, and easy to enter and exit, making the tour a great choice for first-time paddlers, families, and experienced kayakers alike.

FAQs

What is special about kayaking in Salt River Bay National Historical Park?

Salt River Bay is the only site in current U.S. territory where Columbus is documented to have made contact with indigenous inhabitants (the Taino and Carib peoples) in 1493. It is also a remarkable ecological preserve — one of the largest remaining mangrove estuaries in the U.S. Virgin Islands — and home to an astonishing diversity of wildlife. Paddling these protected waters on a guided tour gives you access to areas and stories that simply can't be experienced any other way.

Is there a beach stop on this tour?

Yes! The National Park Kayak Tour includes a stopover at a pristine sandy beach within the park. You're welcome to sunbathe, search for shells, or put on a snorkel mask and explore the shallows. Bring your own snorkel gear if you'd like to make the most of it.

What wildlife can I see on this tour?

Common wildlife encounters include: Cassiopeia jellyfish in the shallow breeding areas, spotted eagle rays, snowy egrets, great blue herons, brown pelicans, green iguanas, sea turtles, and various Caribbean fish species. Birdwatching in the mangroves is a highlight for many guests.

What is the best time of year to kayak Salt River Bay?

The bay is beautiful year-round. Winter months (November–March) typically offer cooler temperatures and calmer trade winds, making for comfortable paddling conditions. Summer brings warm water and lush vegetation. Morning tours are generally calmer and cooler; afternoon tours can be warmer with more dramatic light for photography.

Is this tour appropriate for first-time kayakers?

Yes! The sit-on-top ocean kayaks are wide, stable, and forgiving — the ideal choice for beginners. A safety briefing and paddling demo are always provided before departure.

Does my weight really matter?

Yes — weight limits are extremely important for both safety and kayak performance. The fully transparent “sea thru” kayaks are specially designed to maximize visibility into the water below, but because of their construction, they also have stricter weight limits than traditional kayaks.

For the transparent kayaks:

  • Maximum individual weight: 235 lbs (107 kg)
  • Maximum combined weight per kayak: 385 lbs (175 kg)

These limits help ensure the kayaks remain stable, responsive, and safe on the water. Overloading a kayak increases the risk of taking on water, reduced maneuverability, instability, or capsizing.

Transparent kayaks are generally configured as two-person tandem kayaks, and guests are paired accordingly unless you are a solo traveler or part of an odd-numbered group. If your group exceeds the transparent kayak limits, alternative kayak options may be available depending on availability:

  • Glass-bottom kayaks: up to 385 lbs (175 kg) combined
  • Sit-on-top kayaks: up to 500 lbs (227 kg) combined
  • Paddleboards: maximum 225 lbs (102 kg)

If guests arrive above the posted limits, participation in the transparent kayaks may not be possible, and guides may place guests into another type of kayak if available. These limits are strictly enforced for everyone’s safety.

For families with children:

  • Each child must ride in a kayak with an adult
  • Groups may not have more children than adults
  • If your group has more children than adults, please contact the outfitter before booking to discuss possible arrangements

Guests who voluntarily leave the tour early or who are unable to safely participate in a way that affects group safety may not be eligible for a refund.

Why can't I wear bug spray?

Don’t worry!  We’ve got you covered.  DEET is nasty stuff, it is harmful to the bioluminescent organisms in the bay, and it melts our boats! We will provide a DEET free, Picaridin based insect repellent lotion for your convenience.  You’ll love it.

Why is there an age limit?

Our main concern bringing small children on the tour is that they won’t be able to sit still for the entire tour, and will disrupt the enjoyment of others, since we can’t turn the tour around for only one party.  We’ve set our age limit at 5 years old.  However, if you believe that you have a little one that can handle the time on the water, and you can’t find a baby sitter – give us a call and we can talk about it.  We do have large “sit-on-top” boats that can handle three or four passengers (if one or two of them are small).  Just remember, this is an adventure tour with 1.5 miles of paddling. All children under the age of 13 must have a capable, fit adult in the kayak with paddling with them.

What happens if it rains?

Generally speaking, if it rains, we get wet!  Quick passing showers are one of the delightful things about the Caribbean, especially during certain seasons.  They are called diurnal showers and they frequently pass just after sunset.  If we anticipate widespread, pervasive, nasty, long ongoing rain, then we will cancel the tour.  We make this judgement call about 1.5 hours before the tour departs and send out emails and text messages to alert everyone.  Last year, this happened about four or five times, so it is very rare.   Typically the rain passes quickly, and the tour continues. Light rain does not affect the bioluminescence, and actually, adds a beautiful raindrop effect

Does it matter that I cannot swim?

No worries. All guests are required to wear a USCG approved personal flotation device.  These are comfortable paddling vests, once you get comfortable with them you will forget you have one on, and will want to wear it home.

Cancellation Policy

All cancellations must be made 48 hours prior to tour departure time for groups up to 5, and 72 hours prior to departure time for groups of 6+.

If the customer requests to abandon the tour and return to the marina, or if a guide determines that a guest is unable to safely complete the tour for any reason, or if a guide determines that a guest is affecting the safety of the group, the guest will return to the marina, and no refund will be given.

Any guest who are no-shows, and any guest who do not arrive at the appropriate time will not be given refunds.
