Stand-up paddling looks harder than it is, and this beginner-focused lesson at Kalama Beach Park proves it. Your instructor starts you off with a quick rundown of the basics — stance, balance, and paddle technique — before easing you onto the water for the real thing.
Cruise the South Maui coastline while Haleakalā and the West Maui Mountains fill the view on one side and Molokini Crater and Kahoʻolawe sit on the other. Below the surface, the clear water offers glimpses of coral reef life, and during whale season a Humpback sighting isn't out of the question. Kalama Beach Park is one of the few county-permitted spots on the island for paddleboard lessons, so you're learning in a properly sanctioned, well-managed location rather than somewhere improvised.
Restrooms, showers, and shaded picnic areas are available at the park
