Description

Self-Guided 8.5-Mile Kayak Shuttle Run on Rock Springs Run – Apopka, FL

Paddle the full length of Rock Springs Run — all 8.5 miles / 13.7 km of it — entirely at your own pace. The Shuttle Run is a self-guided downstream paddle from King's Landing all the way to Wekiva Island, with a return shuttle included to bring you back to your car. No guide, no fixed schedule, just you and one of Florida's most extraordinary wild rivers from start to finish.

The run begins in the crystal-clear spring water of the Emerald Cut and transitions downstream into the more tannic, wildlife-rich Wild Florida stretch of Rock Springs Run. As the water darkens and the jungle closes in, the wildlife encounters intensify — larger turtles, alligators, river otters, deer, black bears, herons, egrets, and bald eagles are all commonly spotted on the lower half of the run. The ever-changing landscape keeps every paddle stroke interesting.

The trip averages 4.5 hours on the water, with the full window typically running 4–6 hours depending on how many stops you make. One shuttle departs from the Wekiva Island dock at 3:30pm — this is the only shuttle of the day, and guests must have their shuttle run wristband to board. Guests who arrive at Wekiva Island early are welcome to enter the park at no additional cost and unwind at The Tooting Otter craft beer and wine bar, grab a bite at the Without A Paddle Café, or relax on the boardwalk overlooking the river before the shuttle departs.

This is an experienced paddlers only trip. Due to the length, remote nature, and the one-way format of the run, this is not suitable for beginners. Paddle experience is required.

Optional add-on: guests who launch by 8:30am can paddle the scenic Emerald Cut first before beginning the shuttle run, adding an additional 2 miles / 3.2 km to the journey.

Duration

  1. 4–6 hours on the water (average 4.5 hours)
  2. Approximately 8.5 miles / 13.7 km — entirely downstream
  3. Check-in cutoff: 10:30am — guests who check in after 10:30am will not be permitted to launch for the remainder of the day
  4. Shuttle departs Wekiva Island dock at 3:30pm — guests must have their wristband to board

ADVENTURE PROVIDED BY King's Landing

FAQs

What is the Shuttle run?

The Shuttle Run is a self-guided 8.5-mile / 13.7 km downstream paddle on Rock Springs Run from King's Landing to Wekiva Island, with a shuttle return included. There is no guide — you paddle at your own pace and explore independently. The trip averages 4.5 hours on the water and is for experienced paddlers only. One shuttle departs Wekiva Island at 3:30pm daily.

How is this different from regular rentals?

Most rentals are out-and-back rentals. You paddle out in either direction and return to King's Landing. The Shuttle Run is a one-way, 8.5-mile / 13.7 km downstream trip ending at Wekiva Island, with a shuttle back to your car included. It covers the full length of Rock Springs Run, takes significantly longer, and requires prior paddling experience. The Day Paddle / standard rental is suitable for all skill levels; the Shuttle Run is not.

Do I need prior experience for this run?

Yes — prior paddling experience is required. You need to be comfortable paddling independently for up to 6 hours in a moving river environment and at ease with Florida wildlife, including alligators. This is not a trip for first-time kayakers. If you're new to paddling, start with our guided tours.

Why is there a check-in cutoff time?

Guests must check in by 10:30am — no exceptions. The single daily shuttle departs Wekiva Island at 3:30pm, and the 8.5-mile / 13.7 km trip averages 4.5 hours. Checking in after 10:30am does not leave enough time to complete the run and catch the shuttle. Guests who check in late will not be permitted to launch for the remainder of the day.

What happens if I miss the shuttle?

Guests who arrive at the Wekiva Island dock after the shuttle has departed will be charged a $100 late fee per vessel per hour. The shuttle is the only one of the day, so it is critical to manage your time on the water and arrive at the dock before 3:30pm. A shuttle run wristband is required to board.

Can I paddle the Emerald Cut before the shuttle run?

Yes — if you launch by 8:30am, you can paddle the Emerald Cut first before beginning the downstream shuttle run. This adds approximately 2 miles / 3.2 km to your trip. Plan accordingly and ensure you still have enough time to complete the full 8.5-mile / 13.7 km run and reach Wekiva Island before the 3:30pm shuttle.

What is at Wekiva Island at the end of the run?

Wekiva Island is a riverside park and entertainment venue at the confluence of Rock Springs Run and the Wekiva River. Guests who arrive early can enter at no additional cost with their King's Landing wristband. The Tooting Otter craft beer and wine bar, the Without A Paddle Café, and a scenic boardwalk overlooking the river are all available while you wait for the shuttle.

What is Rock Springs Run and what makes it special?

Rock Springs Run is one of only two designated Wild and Scenic Rivers in Florida, flowing through the heart of the Wekiva River Basin. It is spring-fed, which means the water maintains a constant, crystal-clear quality year-round at a refreshing temperature. The Emerald Cut section is particularly famous for its brilliant green water, overhanging jungle-like canopy, and sandy riverbed. It is a genuine natural oasis only 30 minutes from Orlando.

What wildlife can I expect to see?

Rock Springs Run is rich with Florida wildlife. Commonly spotted animals include river otters, turtles, white-tailed deer, alligators, black bears, and a wide variety of bird species including great egrets, herons, and bald eagles. The spring-fed water also supports diverse fish species visible through the clear water. The river corridor is home to the largest colony of Florida Black Bear in one area and has been featured in National Geographic documentaries.

Are pets allowed?

No — for safety reasons, dogs and all other pets are not permitted at King's Landing. Service animals are permitted but must remain under the handler's control at all times.

Can I bring a cooler?

Yes, coolers are welcome. However, no glass, no Styrofoam, and no alcohol are permitted. All coolers will be checked before launching.

Are speakers or music allowed on the water?

Speakers are not allowed on any vessel launching from King's Landing. This policy is in place to preserve the natural experience for all guests on the water.

Is parking available?

Free street parking is available along the road outside the property. Locker rentals and luggage storage are also available on-site for a fee.

What is the weather policy? Will the tour run if it rains?

Tours run rain or shine in most conditions. Tours will only be canceled by a staff member in the event of severe weather or a safety concern. In that case, a full refund is provided. Light rain, overcast skies, or cool temperatures are not grounds for cancellation. If you have concerns about weather on your booking date, contact the team in advance.

What are the restroom and facility amenities on site?

King's Landing has restrooms, locker rentals, luggage storage at the office, and a small general store on-site. At the end of this tour, guests arrive at Wekiva Island, which has a café, craft beer and wine bar, and a boardwalk overlooking the river.
