Description

Guided Group Bike Ride on the Animas River Trail

Looking for a laid-back way to enjoy the beauty of Durango while meeting fellow adventurers? This mellow group ride along the scenic Animas River Trail is perfect for travelers who want a relaxing intro to biking in the area. The Animas River Trail is a local favorite and a must-do for visitors—an easygoing, scenic path that winds through town along the river, connecting parks, neighborhoods, and views of the surrounding mountains.
We’ll start just south of town and pedal along a paved, mostly flat multi-use path that runs beside the river. While there are a few bumpy sections, the overall ride is smooth and approachable. At an elevation of 6,500 feet, this tour is also a great way to acclimate early in your trip before heading to the higher-elevation trails around 10,000 feet.
Our destination is Oxbow Park & Preserve, a peaceful spot to relax, snack, and dip your toes in the river. We’ll cruise back downstream—with gravity on our side—and stop downtown for organic ice cream at Cream Bean Berry (vegan options available!) before wrapping up our ride.
Transportation, snacks, and daypacks are included, and your knowledgeable guide is WFR-certified and excited to share both their bike expertise and their favorite spots in town. It’s the perfect half-day adventure for easing into your time in the mountains—low-key, fun, and full of local flavor.

Duration

2-3 hours

Location / Where to Meet

We'll provide transportation to and from your lodging (within 5 miles of Durango’s city center). If you are staying farther outside of town, we will establish a spot to meet and transport you from there, or we can meet at 2nd Ave Sports (640 E 2nd Ave, Durango, CO 81301), where we our rent bikes from.
As this is a group tour, please recognize your guide will be making multiple stops to pick up and drop off other guests. Please be on time with your set pick-up time to avoid delaying the entire tour.

Ages & Requirements

This is the easiest biking tour in Durango, and recommended to anyone looking for a cruisy ride or who may be newer to biking.
For Group Tours:
  1. Guests must be at least 5 years old
  2. Must be able to bike for the full duration of the tour
There is no minimum age for private tours; we recommend reserving a private tour if your children are under 5 years old or if anyone in your party requires a slower pace. These can be adjusted to suit your family's pace and needs. Guests under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

What’s Included

  1. Use of our Osprey Daylite Plus backpacks (20L volume)
  2. Snacks: Guides will provide a variety of snacks for guests to pack into their daypacks at the trailhead if they would like.
  3. Transportation to and from your lodging (within 5 miles of Durango’s city center) or an established meeting location
  4. Pick-up and drop-off of your rental bike and helmet from 2nd Ave Sports.
  5. An ice cream of your choosing from Cream Bean Berry
  6. A medically trained and well-experienced biking guide, aware of local dangers and how to mitigate them, who is excited to share their passion for the outdoors with you; as well as their favorite places to eat in town!

What's Not Included

  1. The cost to rent a bike; which is an additional $25-40.
  2. Rain jacket and a variety of layers
  3. Appropriate footwear
  4. Lodging
  5. Personalized Snacks
  6. Trip and Medical Insurance
  7. Water bottles/water badders (ability to carry 1 liter is required)
  8. Guide Gratuity

What to Bring

  1. Rain Jacket (even if the weather calls for pure sunshine, that isn’t always accurate and it can change quickly here)
  2. A variety of clothing layers to adjust to speed of movement and varying weather conditions that will likely occur. Athletic clothing is preferred.
  3. A hat to protect from the intense Colorado sun
  4. Sunglasses
  5. Long sleeve sunshirt (not required, but definitely recommended for this environment)
  6. Sunscreen
  7. Your all-time favorite trail snacks
  8. 1-2 liters of water. (We will have a large water jug in the vehicle to top up water bottles at the trailhead.)
  9. Appropriate footwear: Flip-flops are really the only footwear we do not recommend on this tour. Anything else will do just fine for this cruisy town ride.
  10. If you have your own bike, we recommend bringing it to avoid the rental cost.

FAQs

Do I need to have good physical fitness to do this tour?

Not necessarily! This is one of our most accessible tours and can be adjusted to match a wide range of fitness levels. Your guide will do their best to create a comfortable experience that aligns with your needs and goals, whether you're an experienced rider or just getting back on a bike.

That said, it’s important that you’re able to bike at a relaxed pace while carrying a light daypack, with breaks along the way. To help us prepare the best possible experience—and ensure everyone’s safety—please fill out the health profile section of your registration form completely and accurately. The more we know, the better we can tailor the ride to fit you.

What is the Animas River Trail like?

The Animas River Trail is an iconic Durango experience. You will find locals of all ages and abilities utilizing sections of this trail to get some movement in and enjoy the sights and sounds of the river. It’s a relatively flat, paved trail, no big hills, but it does have a slight incline most the way when headed North, and a slight decline most the way back South. It gets a little bumpy and rough in spots, but overall it is a nice paved trail

This tour takes place on the Animas River Trail in Durango, with a stop downtown for ice cream at Cream Bean Berry. It is a paved multi-use trail, with some bumpy sections, but overall good quality trail. The trail is around 6,500ft in elevation, which for many traveling from out of town is great for acclimatization compared to the high elevation trails around 10,000ft! This makes for a great adventure day earlier on in your trip before you go exploring in the big mountains nearby.

How can we rent bikes?

Feel free to bring your own bike if you have it with you, otherwise we partner with 2nd Avenue Sports for all of our rental needs at a very reasonable price (not included in the tour price). They will have the right bike adjusted to your height and weight ahead of time, and Meraki will pick up the bikes and helmets before the tour.

At checkout, you'll be able to select a full suspension or townie bike, but all you'll need for this tour is the townie bike.

Who are the guides?

All of our guides are longtime bicyclists, who can help adjust your bike to be more comfortable or fix a flat tire on the fly. They are trained in wilderness medicine (WFR certified) and have your safety as their number one priority from start to finish, with the size of your smile as a close second!

How does tipping work with these tours?

Guides put a lot of work into preparing your tour, running it safely, and doing their best to make your smile large and send you home with great memories; and then clean and store gear. Gratuity is not expected, but it is greatly appreciated. If you thought your guide did a great job keeping you safe, teaching you about the area and accommodating your needs, gratuities usually range between 15-20% of the tour price.

What happens if it's raining?

Tours will operate rain or shine, as long as our guides deem the conditions are safe.

What's the difference between a private tour and a mixed group tour?

Private Tour vs. Mixed Group Tour

  • Private Tours are tailored specifically to your group’s interests, fitness level, and pace. Your guide can make real-time adjustments to the route, and there’s no need to accommodate other groups’ pickup or drop-off locations. It’s a personalized, seamless experience from start to finish—perfect for families, special occasions, or anyone wanting a custom adventure.
  • Mixed Group Tours are a shared experience with other adventurers. They’re a great way to meet like-minded people and are more budget-friendly. However, the itinerary and pace are set to suit the whole group.

We love offering both options, but we generally recommend Private Tours for the best flexibility and overall experience.

What is the guest-guide ratio?

Meraki’s 6:1 Guest to Guide ratio allows us to provide proper care and attention to each guest and support them in pushing their unique limits. For those looking for an exceptionally chill experience it also allows us to lavish in good stories and top food recommendations.

Are your guides certified?

All Meraki guides have an active Wilderness First Responder medical certification. This 80-hour wilderness medical course covers a wide variety of situations and issues that could happen in the outdoors and how to manage them professionally. Our rock climbing guides are also certified by the Professional Climbing Guides Institute. All Meraki guides carry a comprehensive first aid kit, as well as a Garmin inReach satellite communication device for when cell service is spotty.

Do you provide food or snacks?

The essential fuel of a good adventure! We pride ourselves on having good (mostly organic) food and good snacks on our trips. Any tour that is over 3 hours in length will have a mostly organic with local ingredients, gourmet sandwich from our Durango Natural Foods Co-op. We care about the quality of nutrition that goes into our bodies, and we share that same standard for our guests. Be sure to check the inclusions and exclusions above for what's included in your tour.

Can I join a tour as a solo guest?

Yes! Solo travelers are always welcome. You can join one of our mixed group tours, which are a fun and social way to experience the outdoors with other like-minded adventurers.

Prefer a more personalized experience? You can also book a private tour as a solo guest, with one-on-one attention from your guide. Either way, we’re happy to accommodate and help you make the most of your time outside!
