Description

Private Full-Day Guided Outdoor Rock Climbing in Red Rock Canyon

For climbers who want to dive deeper, our full-day (six-hour) guided climbing experience in Red Rock Canyon offers the chance to explore more walls, climb more pitches, and work toward personal goals. With a longer format, you’ll have time to tackle a wide range of routes—from beginner-friendly sport climbs to more sustained 100-foot walls that challenge endurance and technique.

Your guide will tailor the day to your interests. Want to focus on climbing as many routes as possible? We’ll keep you moving across multiple cliffs. Interested in skill development? Spend time learning advanced movement, lead climbing strategies, or rappelling techniques on the park’s well-bolted anchors. With over 13 climbing areas—including the dramatic Quarry Wall and the sunlit slabs of Solar Slab—you’ll enjoy both quantity and quality in one of the Front Range’s best-managed climbing parks.
Red Rock Canyon is quieter and more serene than the nearby Garden of the Gods, offering a chance to climb surrounded by towering sandstone walls and sweeping views of Pikes Peak. A full day here is not just about climbing—it’s about immersing yourself in the canyon’s history, geology, and one-of-a-kind setting.

Location / Where to Meet

Red Rock Canyon Open Space is located just south of the Garden of the Gods and U.S. Highway 24 in Colorado Springs. To access the climbing areas:
  1. From U.S. 24, take the only turnoff between 30th Street and the first Manitou Springs exit, then drive a block south to the designated parking lot.
  2. From the trailhead, follow an old road about a half-mile to reach the lake at the start of the canyon.
  3. Trails branch east and west, giving access to the main climbing walls, including Ripple Wall, Whale’s Tail, Quarry Wall, and more.

FAQs

Is Red Rock Canyon good for beginner climbers?

Yes. With plenty of bolted routes in the 5.6–5.9 range, Red Rock Canyon is one of the most beginner-friendly outdoor climbing areas in the Pikes Peak region.

What type of climbing is available?

Red Rock Canyon is almost exclusively sport climbing on bolted sandstone routes, with a handful of climbs that may require small cams or nuts. There are over 100 routes across 13 distinct cliffs.

How tall are the climbs?

Routes range from short 30-foot beginner climbs to tall 100–130-foot walls that require multiple pitches or rappels.

How does Red Rock Canyon compare to Garden of the Gods?

Both offer sandstone climbing, but Red Rock Canyon has better rock quality, more reliable protection with bolt anchors, and far fewer crowds. It’s quieter, safer, and offers a wider range of moderate routes.

Can kids climb here?

Yes! Red Rock Canyon is very family-friendly, with short approaches and safe bolted routes suitable for climbers as young as 9 years old.

When is the best time to climb at Red Rock Canyon?

Spring and fall offer the best conditions, though summer mornings and winter afternoons can also be excellent thanks to the canyon’s sun exposure and multiple wall orientations.

Where and what time is the meeting location?

Your climbing destination and starting time is determined when you book your trip through our office. Your guide calls you prior to your trip to establish your meeting location and confirm your meeting time.

You should plan on arriving to your meeting location five minutes prior to the start of your trip unless your guide instructs you to meet earlier.

Your guide gives you more detailed directions to your exact meeting location when you talk on the phone.

I have my own harness, helmet, and shoes I want to use. Should I bring and use them?

Please let your guide know prior to the trip. Your guide inspects your gear at the start of the trip to determine if they would rather you use company-provided equipment for the trip.

Do I need previous climbing experience to take a guided outdoor rock climbing trip in Colorado?

There is no climbing experience needed at all. Our guided outdoor rock climbing trips are great for every climber, from the first-timer to the very experienced. Our guides tailor each trip to the needs of the climber and/or group.

What if it rains or the weather is bad?

We reserve the right to cancel for any reason, including rain and hazardous weather conditions. If rain or severe weather is forecasted for your day we will notify you the day before to cancel and reschedule if possible. There is no penalty to you if we cancel your trip due to rain or hazardous weather. You are welcome to a full refund or to reschedule if possible.

My friend or family member wants to climb but I only want to watch. Is that okay?

If you are only along for viewing purposes and do not wish to participate, that is not a problem. If you are planning on having people who wish to “just watch,” please be sure to inform your guide of this before the trip. Climbing guides are responsible for managing the climbing site and everyone who is there, no matter if you are climbing or watching. For this reason, it is important for the guide to know how many people to expect on the trip. It is possible that the guide may ask those “just watching” to complete the Assumption of Risk form prior to setting out on the trip.

Should I tip my guide?

Gratuities are always appreciated, but never required. If you are unsure what to tip, think about what you would tip a waiter. 15-20% of the total trip cost is a good place to start.

How much of the day is spent climbing?

One of the goals for every trip is to get you climbing as soon as possible, meaning most of the day takes place at the climbing site. To start the trip, you meet your guide, get outfitted with gear, then head to the climbing site. Actual climbing time comes down to the size of the group and your willingness to participate. You can maximize your climbing time by completing the Assumption of Risk form for each climber beforehand, and bringing them with you for your guide.

I do not like heights. What if I get scared while climbing?

This is very common. Your guide is more than happy to help you relax and keep going, or lower you if you have reached your limit. Just stop, breathe, relax, and enjoy the scenery around you. Take your time and you’ll feel better.

Do you take photos of us?

You can review the memories from your trip at http://frontrangeclimbing.instaproofs.com/store/

There you will be able to view the photos taken during your trip, as well as have the option to purchase some or all of the photos in the form of prints and/or digital copies.

Cancellation Policy

Guest Cancellations
More than 72 hours before trip start time: Guests may cancel for a full refund or reschedule at no charge, subject to availability.
Within 72 hours of trip start time: Payments are nonrefundable and may not be credited or transferred.
No-shows, late arrivals, or early departures: No refund, credit, or rescheduling is available.

Guests who arrive late may participate in the remaining portion of the trip only when doing so does not compromise safety, guide staffing, permits, or the day's itinerary.
Illness, injury, travel delays, personal emergencies, or plan changes: Treated as guest cancellations. Travel insurance is recommended.

FRCC may, at its sole discretion, make exceptions in documented extraordinary circumstances. Any exception does not establish a precedent for future reservations.

FRCC Changes and Cancellations
FRCC may modify, relocate, delay, shorten, or cancel any trip when necessary for safety, weather, wet rock, lightning, high winds, road or trail conditions, wildfire/smoke, closures, permits, guide illness/emergency, or any operational condition affecting safety.
Guide decisions are final. A forecast alone does not automatically cancel a trip; FRCC may make a final decision before or at the scheduled meeting time as conditions develop.

If FRCC cancels a trip before it begins and cannot provide a safe, reasonable alternative (new time, date, activity, or location), the guest may choose:
A full refund of amounts paid to FRCC; or
A full credit toward a future FRCC trip.

If FRCC offers a safe, reasonable alternative location, time, date, or activity and a guest declines, FRCC will issue a full trip credit (valid indefinitely) minus guide wage and a $20 administrative fee. No cash refund will be due.
If FRCC changes a trip time and the guest is unable to reasonably reschedule due to travel or itinerary limitations, FRCC may retain the guide wage and a $20 administrative fee. Any remaining balance will be issued as a trip credit. No cash refund will be due.

Garden of the Gods / Red Rock Canyon & Wet Rock
Sandstone can be fragile after precipitation, freezing, or moisture. FRCC will not climb on wet, unstable rock. The City of Colorado Springs requests climbers refrain from visibly wet or frosted formations.
When Garden of the Gods conditions are unsuitable, FRCC may relocate the trip to another appropriate area or offer a different climbing activity. A location change does not qualify for a refund provided a comparable alternative experience is offered.
If no safe alternative is available or FRCC cancels due to ongoing weather/wet rock and the guest cannot reschedule, the guest may select a full refund or full trip credit.

Trips Shortened After Starting
If a trip is delayed, modified, or ended early after starting due to safety, weather, rock conditions, guest conduct, or injury, refunds and credits are not guaranteed.
FRCC may issue a partial credit at its discretion when a trip is materially shortened solely due to FRCC’s operational decision and no reasonable alternative can be provided.
