FAQs
What is the difference between a private lesson and an exclusive private group lesson?
A private lesson is 1-on-1: just you and your instructor. An exclusive private group lesson is for 2–4 people who book together and want a dedicated instructor to themselves — it's private in the sense that you won't be grouped with strangers, but shared between your party. Both options are available for 2 hours.
Is a private lesson better for young children?
Yes — private lessons are ideal for young children who benefit from extra patience, individualized pacing, and one-on-one attention. Children 9 years and younger are required to book a private.
Can I work on improving my existing skills rather than learning from scratch?
Absolutely. Private and semi-private sessions are a great option for returning surfers who want to build on existing skills. Your instructor will tailor the session to your current level and goals.
What sunscreen should I use?
Common sunscreens contain chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate that harm coral reefs. Please use a reef-safe, mineral-based, non-nano sunscreen. Consider wearing a long-sleeve rash guard as an alternative or complement to sunscreen.
Will I be able to stand up on my first lesson?
Most students stand up and ride waves on their very first lesson! Your instructor's goal is to get you up and riding as many waves as possible. That said, surfing is a skill that takes practice, and every person progresses at their own pace.
Do I need prior experience to join a group surf lesson?
Not at all — this lesson is designed for first-timers and complete beginners. No experience is necessary. Your instructor will cover everything you need to know on the sand before you enter the water.
Is this a Hawaiian-owned surf school?
Yes. This school has been Hawaiian-owned and operated since 1998 and is one of the oldest surf schools on Maui. The founder's family has deep roots in Hawaiian surf culture — the family lineage connects directly to King Kalakaua's inner circle, and the school's heritage in He'e Nalu (surfing, "The Sport of Kings") spans generations.
