Description

Private Guided Zion Narrows Hiking Tour - Transportation from Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort

Start your Narrows adventure the right way - with a warm breakfast at Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort before your private guide leads you on a fully supported full-day journey into one of the world's most iconic slot canyons. Departing from the east side of Zion National Park, you'll enjoy a scenic 45-minute drive through the park's east entrance and down into Zion Canyon, with your guide narrating the geology and history of the landscape unfolding around you the whole way there.
From the Temple of Sinawava, the Riverside Walk leads you 1 mile (1.6 km) to where the trail becomes the river itself. Then the real adventure begins: wading upstream through the crystal-clear Virgin River as towering sandstone walls rise over 1,000 feet (305 m) above you, narrowing to just 20–30 feet (6–9 m) wide in places. Your private guide leads you as far as Orderville Canyon junction, the furthest point permitted for guided tours, approximately 5–6 miles (8–10 km) round trip. Midway through the canyon, take a break at a calm, shaded alcove for the included hearty lunch before heading back downstream.
The return drive from Springdale to Zion Ponderosa gives you time to decompress and relive the highlights with your guide before arriving back at the resort — tired, fed, and fully immersed in what Zion has to offer.

FAQs

What is the Zion Narrows and why is it special?

The Zion Narrows is the slot canyon section of the Virgin River within Zion National Park. Over millions of years, the river has carved a 2,000-foot (610 m) deep channel through Navajo sandstone, sometimes narrowing to just 20–30 feet (6–9 m) wide. The bottom-up hike begins at the Temple of Sinawava, follows the Riverside Walk for 1 mile (1.6 km), then enters the river itself for the remainder of the route. It is consistently ranked among the top hikes in the United States.

How deep is the water in the Narrows?

Water depth varies significantly by season, recent rainfall, and how far you hike. Most sections are ankle-to-knee deep, but some areas can reach waist depth or higher. Your guide monitors river conditions before and during the hike and will adjust the route for safety. Flash flood risk is real — East Zion Adventures monitors forecasts closely and will not run the tour if conditions are unsafe.

When is the best time of year to hike the Narrows?

Late spring through early fall (May–October) offers the warmest water temperatures and most comfortable conditions. Summer is the busiest season. Fall (September–October) is a sweet spot with cooler air, lower water, and beautiful colors on the canyon walls. The Narrows is accessible year-round, but cold temperatures in winter and spring require waders and insulating layers for a safe experience.

Is this tour suitable for people who are not strong swimmers?

You do not need to be a strong swimmer for the guided portion of the Narrows — most sections are wading depth. However, you should be comfortable being in moving water up to waist depth and capable of maintaining your footing on slippery surfaces with the provided pole. Your guide will assess conditions and support you throughout.

Who are the guides and what are their qualifications?

Our guides are local experts with deep knowledge of the geology, history, wildlife, and ecology of southern Utah. Guides are trained in safety protocols and first aid, and are dedicated to providing both educational and entertaining experiences tailored to each group.

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend booking at least 2 weeks in advance, and several months ahead for large groups or peak season visits to ensure availability.

What is your approach to sustainability and conservation?

Our guides follow Leave No Trace principles on all tours. Guests are asked to pack out all waste, stay on designated paths, and respect all plants, wildlife, and rock formations. We operate in and around federally protected lands and take stewardship of those landscapes seriously.

What wildlife might I encounter on tours in the East Zion area?

The East Zion and southern Utah region is home to mule deer, coyotes, jackrabbits, lizards, hawks, eagles, ravens, and a variety of desert songbirds. Mountain lions are native to the area but extremely rarely encountered. Rattlesnakes are present in the region but generally avoid human contact — wearing closed-toe shoes and watching where you place your hands is good practice.

Do tours run in bad weather?

Most tours run rain or shine. However, if severe weather creates unsafe conditions, we will offer guests a different date or a full refund. For tours involving dirt road access (such as Candy Cliffs and White Pocket), road conditions after rain may require rescheduling.
