Learn to Windsurf on Maui!

Experience the perfect introduction to windsurfing with a private lesson designed to give you a strong, successful start on the water. Maui’s legendary north shore offers some of the best beginner-friendly conditions in the world, with steady trade winds, warm water, and a sandy launching area protected by an outer reef. This creates a safe, supportive environment where new windsurfers can focus on learning the fundamentals without being overwhelmed by waves or strong currents.
Private lessons ensure that every minute is tailored to your ability level, pace, and comfort. You’ll start on stable beginner boards and use sails specifically matched to your height, weight, and strength—making it easier to balance, steer, and manage the wind’s power. With your instructor by your side, you’ll learn essential skills such as stance, sail control, turning, and understanding wind direction. Their step-by-step coaching and in-water guidance help you progress quickly while maintaining a strong emphasis on safety.
Whether you’re brand new to windsurfing or returning to the sport after time away, a private lesson gives you the personalized instruction needed to build confidence and enjoy your first day on the board. It’s an exciting, rewarding way to engage with Maui’s ocean playground and experience the thrill of harnessing the wind for the very first time.

FAQs

Is this lesson suitable for complete beginners?

Yes. These windsurfing lessons are designed specifically to accommodate first-time students. You’ll start with the fundamentals on land—learning how to hold the sail, steer, and balance—before moving into calm, shallow water. The boards used for beginners are wide, strong, and very stable, and the sail size is chosen based on your height and strength to make the learning process easier. No prior experience with wind sports is needed.

Is there an age limit?

There is no strict published age limit, but most students meaningfully participate starting around 8–10 years old, when they have the strength and coordination to manage a small sail and follow on-water instruction. Younger children may be able to try using specialized kid gear, depending on their comfort in the water and listening abilities. Adults of all ages can learn as long as they meet the basic swimming requirement.

Is windsurfing physically demanding?

Windsurfing does require some physical effort—mainly balance, core stability, and the ability to lift a light training sail from the water. Beginner sails are designed to be easy to manage, and the pace of the lesson is adjusted to your comfort level. Most people find the activity energizing rather than exhausting, and you can always take breaks as needed. You don’t need to be a high-level athlete to enjoy your first windsurfing lesson.

Will I be able to stand up or sail on my first day?

Many beginners are able to stand and sail short distances during their first lesson, but progress varies from person to person. The goal of the session is to give you a strong foundation—how to balance, steer, and control the sail—so that standing and sailing become easier as you gain confidence. Your instructor will guide you step-by-step, but there is no pressure to reach a specific milestone on your first day.

Can friends or family watch from the beach while I take the lesson?

Absolutely. Kanahā Beach Park is very spectator-friendly, with sandy beaches, grassy areas, and plenty of space to relax. Friends and family can watch you practice, take photos, or simply enjoy the ocean view while you’re in the lesson. It’s a great environment for supporters to cheer you on.

Do I need to know how to swim?

Yes. All participants must be able to swim comfortably. Windsurfing involves standing in the water, falling in, and climbing back onto the board, so being comfortable in the ocean is essential for safety. Strong swimming ability isn’t required, but basic competence and confidence in the water are.

What are the differences between wingsurfing and windsurfing?

Though both sports use wind for propulsion, wingsurfing and windsurfing differ significantly in gear, technique, and feel:

The Power Source

  • Wingsurfing: Uses a lightweight handheld wing. Nothing is attached to the board.
  • Windsurfing: Uses a mast and sail fixed to the board, creating a more rigid setup.

Weight and Complexity

  • Wings are simple, light, and easy to handle—ideal for beginners and travel-friendly.
  • Windsurfing rigs are heavier, more technical, and require more setup knowledge.

Freedom of Movement

  • Wingsurfing allows full body mobility because the wing isn’t attached. You can hold it overhead, let it float, or de-power instantly.
  • Windsurfing limits mobility due to the fixed mast and sail.

Learning Curve

  • Wingsurfing generally has a faster and gentler learning curve—especially for basic riding.
  • Windsurfing requires more strength, coordination, and understanding of rig control early on.

Foil Integration

  • Foil progression is central to wingsurfing, making it easy to transition to hydrofoiling.
  • Windfoiling exists, but the gear and technique are more complex.

Launch Requirements

  • Wingsurfing can launch from narrow beaches, shallow water, or small coves.
  • Windsurfing requires more space and depth due to the long mast and large sail.
