Description
Private One-on-One Surf Lessons in Kihei, Maui!
Get the full focus of an expert surf instructor on you and you alone in a private two-hour session at Kalama Park in Kihei. Set on Maui's warm, sheltered south shore with gentle waves and semi-shallow water, this is one of the island's best environments for learning — and with one-on-one coaching, your progress can move as fast as you want it to.
Your lesson begins on the sand, where your instructor walks you through everything before you ever touch the water: paddling mechanics, how to read and time a wave, the pop-up from prone to standing, ocean awareness, and surf etiquette. Then it's into the ocean for hands-on guidance from a dedicated guide who is watching every ride and giving you real-time feedback — adjusting technique, helping you choose the right waves, and keeping the experience fun from first paddle to last wave.
Because the session is built entirely around you, your guide can slow down, speed up, or shift focus based on exactly what you need in the moment. Whether you're a complete first-timer, an adult checking surfing off the bucket list, or a returning surfer working on a specific skill, the hour-by-hour experience is yours to shape.
Book early in your trip — and early in the morning — for the calmest conditions and the best shot at getting back out there before your vacation wraps up!

FAQs
Do I need prior surfing experience?
Not at all. Lessons are designed for complete beginners through to surfers looking to sharpen their skills. Your instructor will tailor coaching to your ability from the moment you hit the sand.
What is the age requirement?
There is no specific minimum age. Private lessons are specifically recommended for children under 10 for safety and to maximize their experience on the board.
Is this truly one-on-one — will I have the instructor all to myself?
Yes. Private lessons are dedicated entirely to you, one instructor to one surfer, for the full two hours. No other participants join your session.
Is a private lesson a good option for children?
Yes — private lessons are specifically recommended for children under 10, as the focused one-on-one attention allows the instructor to work directly with the child's pace, comfort level, and ability. Many reviewers note young children getting to their feet within the first session.
What wave conditions can I expect at Kalama Park?
Kalama Park offers gentle, rolling waves in semi-shallow water, making it one of Maui's most beginner-friendly surf environments. Conditions are generally best in the morning before the trade winds pick up.
What will I learn during the beach instruction portion?
Before entering the water, your instructor covers the full fundamentals: paddling mechanics, how to pop up from prone to standing, ocean awareness, wave selection, and surf etiquette — the complete toolkit for a successful first (or improved) surf session.
Will I actually stand up during my lesson?
Most participants stand up during their lesson thanks to the personalized coaching and the consistent, manageable waves at Kalama Park. Your guide will work with you at your pace throughout the entire session.
What if I’m not a strong swimmer?
No problem! Our lessons take place in semi-shallow waters where most people can comfortably stand. While basic swimming ability is helpful, our instructors are there to assist you throughout the lesson, and we ensure a safe and supportive environment for all skill levels.
What if I’m nervous about surfing for the first time?
It's completely normal to feel a bit nervous before your first surf lesson! Our instructors specialize in working with beginners and will guide you every step of the way, from basic safety tips to getting comfortable in the water. We take things at your pace, so you can relax and enjoy the experience. Surfing is all about fun, and we’re here to make sure you feel confident and supported!
