FAQs

Who should I book the private lesson?

The private lesson is the best choice for anyone who wants the undivided attention of their instructor for the full 2 hours. It's especially recommended for families with young children (where focused safety supervision is a priority), nervous first-timers, people with physical considerations they want to discuss one-on-one, and anyone with specific technique goals. It's also popular for honeymooners and couples.

Is this truly 1-on-1?

Yes — the private lesson is booked per surfer and paired with a single dedicated instructor for the full 2-hour session. For a couple or two friends who want to share a private experience, that would be considered a semi-private lesson.

Will I stand up on my first lesson?

The instructors are trained to maximize your chance of success. With 1-on-1 attention, most participants stand up within their first session. Your instructor will select the right board and the right waves for your specific ability level.

What fitness level do I need?

No specific fitness level is required for a beginner lesson on the gentle waves at Kalama Park. The ability to paddle while lying on a surfboard and push up to a standing position is the core physical requirement. If you have any physical concerns or limitations, let your instructor know before the lesson and they will adapt accordingly.

What makes Kalama Park a good place to learn?

Kalama Park is known for its warm water, mellow waves, and forgiving surf conditions. The waves here tend to roll in gently and break in relatively shallow water, which creates a more approachable environment for beginners and developing surfers. The consistency of the break also gives students more opportunities to practice catching waves throughout the lesson.

Is this lesson suitable for complete beginners?

Absolutely. Kalama Park’s gentle, beginner-friendly waves make it one of the best places on Maui to learn how to surf for the first time. Your instructor walks you through everything step-by-step, from paddling and popping up to wave timing and ocean safety, while staying beside you in the water the entire lesson.

What safety certifications do your guides have?

Your instructors are trained in surf instruction, ocean safety, CPR, and First Aid.

What happens if ocean or weather conditions aren't good for my scheduled lesson?

If conditions aren't suitable, your guides will work with you to reschedule for another date, or provide a refund per the cancellation policy below.

What if I'd like to book more than one private lesson to keep progressing?

Multiple lessons can be booked to keep building your skills; for a structured multi-day option, your guides also offer a 3-day private surf camp.

Cancellation Policy

No refund given for any circumstance within 24 hours prior to your lesson. Customers will also receive a full refund in case of operator cancellation due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
