Description
Catch Your First Wave or Take Your Surfing Further at Ala Moana!
Paddle out where Duke Kahanamoku's legacy still rides every wave. O'ahu is the birthplace of modern surfing, and catching your first wave here, with warm water around you and the Honolulu skyline behind you, is a bucket-list moment you won't forget.
Your lesson begins on the sand at Ala Moana Beach Park, where you'll practice your pop-up and get comfortable on the board before heading into the water. Your instructor then takes you out to gentle, rolling waves and stays with you every step of the way, helping you time your paddle, find your stance, and ride toward shore. For surfers ready to step it up, intermediate sessions head farther out to join the lineup at the break and take on bigger waves.
Ala Moana sits right between Waikiki and downtown Honolulu, making it an easy morning start from just about anywhere in town. Book a private session for one-on-one coaching, or bring your family and friends along for a group lesson.

FAQs
Who will my instructor be?
You'll work with either our founder or another member of our team, all of whom are experienced watermen and waterwomen. Our founder is a competitive watersports athlete originally from the Dominican Republic who started out as a champion freestyle and wave windsurfer before mastering kiteboarding, surfing, and stand-up paddleboarding. In 2019, he was selected as the Dominican Republic's top windsurfer to compete in the Olympic qualifiers.
What languages are lessons taught in?
Lessons are available in English and Spanish.
I've never surfed before. Is this lesson for me?
Absolutely. In a Level 1 (Beginner) lesson, we start on land and help you build confidence as you learn the foundations of surfing. You'll practice your pop-up, then head into the water to catch and ride waves with your instructor guiding you every step of the way.
What does an intermediate lesson look like?
Once you've mastered the whitewater, a Level 2 (Intermediate) lesson takes you farther offshore to join other surfers in the lineup at the break. You'll work on catching and riding bigger, unbroken waves.
Where will my lesson be held?
Surf lessons are taught at Ala Moana Beach Park in Honolulu. Our meetup spot is at the beginning of the beach park, by the shore, when you use the entrance across from Kamake'e Street. Look for our bright blue van, and when in doubt, give us a call.
Can I keep surfing after my lesson?
Yes. Surfboard rentals are available by the day or week. Check out our equipment rental listing for details or select surfboard rental for a daily rental after your lesson at checkout.
Do I need to book in advance?
Yes. All lessons and rentals require an advance reservation and must be paid for ahead of time. We aren't able to accept payment on the beach.
Why don't you teach lessons at Kailua Beach?
There is currently a ban on commercial activity at Kailua Beach Park, which means no business can teach lessons there. Once you're riding independently, you're welcome to kiteboard, windsurf, surf, or paddleboard at Kailua on your own, and independent riders renting gear from us can have it dropped off and picked up at a Kailua residence.
Do I need to know how to swim?
Yes. For your safety, we require that every guest knows how to swim, regardless of the activity you choose. All guests must also be in good health for physical activity.
Do I need to sign a waiver?
Yes. Each participant must complete their own liability waiver, and anyone under 18 must have their waiver completed by a parent or legal guardian. We ask that you complete the waiver online before your lesson or rental. It only takes a moment and is mobile-friendly.
Are you involved in the local community?
Yes. We're a locally owned and operated family business committed to serving both our local community and visitors from around the world, and to protecting the natural environment that makes these sports possible. We're a member of the Kailua Chamber of Commerce and partner with Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Kailua Kiteboarders Club, a local group that sets safety guidelines and organizes events like beach cleanups.
What sunscreen should I use?
Please use only reef-safe sunscreen — common sunscreens contain chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate that harm coral reefs and are absorbed by marine organisms. Reef-safe and reef-SAFE sunscreens use non-nano mineral particles that are too large for corals to ingest. Look for products labeled non-nano and free of oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens. Sun-protective rash guards are an excellent alternative.
