Description

Private Surf Lesson — West Maui, Lahaina!

Trade the crowds for a quiet stretch of West Maui coastline and stand up on your first wave with a dedicated instructor by your side. This surf lesson takes place at a mellow beginner-friendly break just south of Lahaina known locally as "the Guardrails," where long, gentle rollers and a sandy entry make it one of the easiest spots on the island to learn.
Every lesson is kept private to your own group — there are no strangers joining in — and you can choose the format that fits your crew: a one-on-one lesson with your own dedicated instructor, a semi-private lesson for two, or a larger private group lesson for family or friends. Whichever you pick, your guides keep one of the lowest student-to-instructor ratios on the island (3:1) so everyone gets real coaching, not just a quick push into a wave.
Lessons begin on the sand with a safety and technique briefing before you head into the water to put it into practice, and your instructor stays close by for the full two hours. No experience is necessary — this is a beginner-focused lesson designed to get first-timers standing and riding with confidence, while more experienced surfers can also use the time to sharpen technique.

FAQs

Do I need previous surfing experience?

No. Lessons are built for first-timers and are taught by friendly, experienced instructors who tailor the pace to your comfort level. More experienced surfers are also welcome and can use the lesson to refine technique.

Is gear provided, or do I need my own?

A surfboard, rashguard, and water shoes are included with every lesson at no extra cost. You're welcome to bring your own board if you prefer.

What's the difference between the private, semi-private, and group lesson options?

The one-on-one private lesson pairs you with your own dedicated instructor for the most individualized coaching and fastest progression. The semi-private lesson is a shared two-person session that still gets plenty of one-on-one attention. The group lesson is a more social format for families or larger crews learning together, while still keeping the 3:1 instructor ratio.

Can young kids do this lesson?

Yes — children as young as 5 can join, though guests ages 5–9 are required to book the one-on-one private format for extra individual attention in the water.

Is this a good spot for beginners?

Yes — the lesson takes place at a beginner-friendly break with a sandy entry and consistently gentle, rolling waves, making it one of the easier spots on the island to learn.

Will I actually stand up and ride a wave?

Most first-time surfers are able to stand and ride during their 2-hour lesson thanks to the low instructor ratio and beginner-friendly wave conditions, though individual results can vary.
