Description

Private South Maui SUP Tour Along Maui’s Lava Coast & Turtle Reefs

Experience Maui’s coastline from the perspective of a paddleboard as you glide through the clear waters of Makena Bay on a private stand-up paddleboarding adventure. Led by a certified naturalist guide, this scenic South Maui tour takes you past underwater sea caves, rugged lava cliffs, coral reefs, and areas frequented by Hawaiian green sea turtles. Along the way, you’ll enjoy incredible views of Haleakalā, Molokini Crater, Puʻu Ōlaʻi (Red Hill), and the sweeping coastline of South Maui stretching into the distance.
Unlike larger boat tours, this experience moves at the natural pace of the ocean itself. Quiet and unhurried, paddleboarding allows you to fully take in the landscape while staying close to the water and marine life around you. It’s not uncommon to spot a turtle surfacing nearby or see tropical fish moving beneath your board in the clear water below. During humpback whale season from December through April, whales are also frequently seen offshore in the nearby Auʻau Channel.
This tour is designed for all experience levels, from complete beginners to experienced paddlers. If it’s your first time on a paddleboard, your guide will begin with a personalized lesson in the calm, protected waters of Makena Bay, where most guests are comfortably paddling within the first 30 minutes. Every tour is completely private for your group and can be customized based on your interests, pace, and comfort level. A complimentary digital photo package is included so you can focus on enjoying the experience while your guide captures the adventure along the way.

Please enjoy their company if they approach from a distance and calmly move away from them if in their path. Please also be respectful of the fact that coral is a living organism and any standing, touching, or knocking over will irreparably damage the organism that takes a very long time to grow and is essential to our marine reefs.

FAQs

What landmarks and sights will I see on the Coastal Sightseeing tour?

The tour follows the Makena coastline, where you'll paddle past underwater sea caves, rugged lava cliffs, and colorful reef formations. From the water, you'll have views of the Haleakalā summit (Maui's dominant dormant volcano rising to 10,023 ft / 3,055 m), Molokini Crater (the crescent-shaped volcanic tuff cone and marine reserve offshore), and Pu'u Ōla'i (the 360 ft / 110 m cinder cone also known as Red Hill). From December through April, look to the Au'au Channel for humpback whales.

What sunscreen should I use and why?

Please use only reef-safe sunscreen — common formulas contain chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate that harm coral reefs. Look for non-nano mineral sunscreens free of oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens. A UV-protective rash guard is an excellent alternative.

Do I need previous experience to join a tour?

No prior stand up paddleboarding experience is necessary. Your guide will provide comprehensive instruction on land before you enter the water. Tours accommodate all skill levels, from complete first-timers to experienced paddlers.

What wildlife can I see during my tour?

Hawaiian green sea turtles are the stars of the show on the Makena coastline. Other wildlife you may encounter includes colorful reef fish, moray eels, spotted eagle rays, and Hawaiian monk seals (rare but possible). From December through April, humpback whales are frequently seen and heard in the Au'au Channel just offshore.

What makes paddleboarding in South Maui special?

South Maui's Makena coastline is one of the most ecologically rich stretches of coastline in all of Hawaii. The area — often called "Turtle Town" — is renowned for its large resident population of Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu), pristine coral reef systems, lava formations, underwater sea caves, and crystal-clear visibility. Paddling here gives you a quiet, crowd-free perspective of the coastline that you simply can't get from the shore.
