Wildlife Guidelines for Snorkeling
Please be respectful of the fact that coral is a living organism and any standing, touching, or knocking over will irreparably damage the organism that takes a very long time to grow and is essential to our marine reefs. Please also be respectful of any marine animals including but not limited to turtles, rays, sharks, seals, and dolphins. Please never chase, harass, feed, or TOUCH any of the marine species. Enjoy their company if they approach from a distance and calmly move away from them if in their path.

FAQs
How many people can you accommodate on a private tour?
We can accommodate groups of 4 to 14 people.
Is this tour what I am looking for?
If you are looking for the most unique thing to do in Puerto Rico, a professionally curated and proven beach tour snorkeling tour, sunset watching tour boat tour and bioluminescence swim tour totally off the beaten path making the most out of your time and money, you better book this one!
Where will I be picked up and dropped off?
You will be picked up and dropped off in Condado at 1055 Ashford Ave, in the Condado Vanderbilt Valet area, or behind Walgreens if coming in on a cruise so you do not have to get a taxi or Uber to go to some spot in Old San Juan and then guess where to find your guide or stand among hundreds of people coming off the ship trying to find your guide.
Will there be a language barrier between me and my guide?
No chance of that happening, you will get a fully bilingual professional guide during all the experience.
Will I see only a portion of the Cay and then be on my own?
The beauty of this tour is that we take you through the Cay and show you in a way you can then experience it while we keep an eye on you and keep you safe at all moments. You can also come back to the boat and enjoy the views and refreshments.
What makes this tour different from other Snorkeling and/ or Bioluminescent tours?
The biggest difference in our tour is a combination of Snorkeling, Sunset watching and a Bioluminescence swim in a boat requiring no effort on your part.
Caracoles Cay warm, turquoise and crystal clear waters rival famed Flamenco Beach in Culebra, but without the hassle of having to take an Uber or drive more than an hour to Fajardo to then take a 1 hour ferry. But you can also swim and immerse in it, not just swipe your hand 3 feet above the water in a kayak which is the only option doing the Fajardo Bioluminiscense tours are all performed in Kayaks and is an uneventful and less than ideal way to do it due to the kayaking in the dark through a narrow channel bumping to other kayaks and mangrove roots. It is also within the main island so no ferry or overnight stay to do it like in Mosquito Bay.
Is swimming in bioluminescent waters safe for me or the bioluminescence?
Swimming in the bioluminescent waters is a regular swim. The dinoflagellates are microscopic and very resilient so our skin oils represent no harm for them, and you can't feel any difference from regular sea water other than the bay is a bit warmer because limited water flow and salter because there were salt mines in the area, but that's good because you will float easier. We also have foam noodles that you can use and float even easier.
What sunscreen can I use and why does it matter?
Common sunscreens contain chemicals that can harm coral reefs, as the particles are small enough to be absorbed by corals, causing toxicity and coral bleaching. Reef-friendly sunscreens are formulated without these harmful chemicals. Reef-SAFE sunscreens go a step further by using non-nano particles, which are too large for corals to ingest, helping to preserve marine ecosystems.
Please avoid sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens. Consider wearing sun-protective clothing, like long-sleeve rash guards, as an alternative to sunscreen. If you choose a mineral-based sunscreen, ensure it is labeled ‘non-nano.’
Are there sharks?
Shark incidents in Puerto Rico’s waters are extremely rare, and serious injuries are even rarer. When you enter the ocean, it’s important to remember that it’s a natural, wild environment with many types of marine life, including sharks. Although the chances of a shark-related injury are very low, they are still part of the ocean’s ecosystem, and the ocean should be approached with respect. By learning about sharks and following safety guidelines, you can minimize even this small risk.
Can I snorkel if I wear glasses?
Standard eyeglasses can’t be worn with a snorkel mask, but prescription masks are available for those who need vision correction while snorkeling. If you’re interested, consider looking into a prescription mask option before your tour. Alternatively, contact lenses can be worn under a snorkel mask, though it’s best to close your eyes if water enters to prevent losing a lens.
Can you go underwater with a snorkel?
Yes, snorkels allow you to breathe with your face in the water at the surface. If you’d like to dive down, though, water will enter the snorkel, so you’ll need to hold your breath until you resurface. Once back at the surface, you can clear the snorkel by blowing out the air in your mouth hard. That should clear the snorkel, but if it doesn’t, tread the water, remove the snorkel from your mouth, and dump the mouthpiece out.
