Description
Surf Maui Together: Semi-Private Surf Lessons in Kihei
Share your first waves with a small circle of family or friends, guided by an instructor who's giving your group their full attention. Your lesson opens with a warm welcome and a relaxed land briefing on the sand, then moves into the gentle, rolling water at one of Maui's most trusted beginner breaks. With extra one-on-few coaching in the water, your guide can fine-tune your paddling and timing in real time, so more of your group ends up standing tall on a wave before the two hours are through.

FAQs
What is the difference between a semi-private and a group lesson?
Both have a maximum of 6 surfers per instructor. The semi-private lesson requires a minimum booking of 2 people and is intended for a self-contained group (e.g., couples, friends, families) rather than being combined with strangers. The group lesson combines groups with separate bookings.
Is this lesson suitable for complete beginners?
Yes — these lessons are specifically designed for beginners and first-time surfers. Kalama Park’s gentle, rolling waves and shallow water create one of the best learning environments on Maui. Your instructor teaches everything step-by-step, from paddling and standing up to ocean safety and wave timing, so no previous surfing experience is needed.
Will I actually be able to stand up on the board?
Many first-time surfers are able to stand up during their lesson, especially with the help of wide, stable beginner boards and hands-on coaching from the instructor. Everyone progresses at their own pace, but the lesson is designed to give you the best chance possible to catch waves and build confidence in the water.
What are the waves like at Kalama Park?
Kalama Park is known for its mellow, beginner-friendly surf conditions. The waves are typically smaller, softer, and more predictable than many other Maui surf spots, which makes it ideal for learning. The semi-shallow water also helps beginners feel more comfortable while practicing.
Can friends or family watch from the beach?
Absolutely. Kalama Park has a wide beach and grassy areas where friends and family can relax, watch the lesson, and cheer you on from shore. It’s a great spectator-friendly beach with beautiful views of the South Maui coastline.
What should I expect after my first surf lesson?
Most guests leave feeling tired, excited, and completely hooked on surfing. Beyond just learning how to ride waves, you’ll gain a better understanding of ocean conditions, surf etiquette, paddling technique, and wave timing. Many first-time surfers are surprised by how fun and rewarding the experience feels after just one session.
What happens if ocean or weather conditions aren't good for my scheduled lesson?
If conditions aren't suitable, your guides will work with you to reschedule for another date, or provide a refund per the cancellation policy below.
