Description

Take the Road to Hāna in Reverse & See Maui Come Alive from Backside to Rainforest!

Instead of following the traditional Road to Hāna route, flip the adventure around and experience the full loop in reverse. Your private guide takes you around Haleakalā from the opposite direction, beginning with Maui’s open Upcountry and rugged backside before gradually making your way into the waterfalls, rainforest, and famous scenery surrounding Hāna. It’s a completely different progression through the island—watching dry ranch country and volcanic coastline slowly transform into the dense tropical landscapes for which East Maui is famous.

And this is much more than a scenic drive. Depending on conditions and your group’s interests, you can get out and hike beneath rainbow eucalyptus trees, trek to a natural waterfall, explore lava tubes and sea caves, watch blowholes erupt along the coast, swim at multicolored beaches, and potentially hike to a secluded red sand beach. Your private guide can shape the day around what excites your group most, whether that means more hiking and swimming or more photography, sightseeing, Hawaiian history, and hidden stops.

Along the way, you’ll also get a taste of Maui beyond the scenery, with opportunities to grab local favorites like fresh banana bread, huli huli chicken, and kalua pork tacos, plus a possible tasting stop in ʻUlupalakua. By completing the full reverse loop, you’ll experience an incredible cross-section of Maui in one day—from Upcountry ranchlands and the remote backside of Haleakalā to lava-carved coastline, waterfalls, beaches, and the famous rainforests of Hāna.

ADVENTURE PROVIDED BY Local Maui Tours

FAQs

What's the difference between this and other Maui tour companies?

Tours are always private and limited to your own group, run by a guide who grew up on Maui. Rather than sticking to the standard tourist stops, your guide gets out of the vehicle at lookouts and hidden spots that larger tour companies often drive right past.

Are tours suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels?

Tours are customized to fit your group's capabilities and interests. Some groups prefer a tour focused on sightseeing and photo stops, while others want to prioritize hiking and more active stops — just let your guide know your preferences ahead of time. Kids age 7 and up can fully participate.

What if we're traveling with a baby or toddler who needs a car seat?

Family tours are welcome. Babies and young children riding in a car seat are free of charge, space permitting, and aren't counted as a guest. You'll need to bring your own car seat, stroller, or carrier.

Are meals or snacks provided?

Meals and snacks aren't included. Your guide will point out great local options along the route — food trucks, roadside stands, and restaurants — but guests cover their own food and drink costs.

What if I get motion sick in the car?

Let your guide know in advance if you're prone to motion sickness. The route can be adjusted to help minimize winding sections, and you should bring your own medication if needed.

What makes the Reverse Full Loop different from the Hana Jungle Tour?

This tour continues past Hana and circles the base of Haleakalā to the leeward south side of the island — a route most rental car companies won't allow, and one that most visitors never see. It runs about two hours longer than the Hana Jungle Tour and may include a stop at a South Maui vineyard.

How much hiking is involved on this tour?

There are several opportunities to get out and hike, including walks through rainbow eucalyptus groves and tropical gardens, a hike to a natural waterfall, and the option to hike out to a rare red sand beach. Your guide can dial the amount of hiking up or down based on what your group wants.
