Private Kayak & Snorkel Adventure at Turtle Reef, Olowalu
Pricing
Description
Paddle the Olowalu Coast: Private Kayak & Snorkel Adventure!
Discover Maui’s coastline from the seat of a kayak on this fully private ocean adventure along the waters of Olowalu. With only your group and your guide, you’ll paddle across clear Caribbean-blue water beneath the West Maui Mountains, exploring a stretch of coastline known for its coral reefs, sea turtles, and incredible island views. The private format allows the experience to move at your pace, whether you want to spend more time paddling, snorkeling, wildlife watching, or simply taking in the scenery.
The centerpiece of the tour is Turtle Reef, one of West Maui’s best places to snorkel with Hawaiian green sea turtles (Honu). After arriving by kayak, you’ll enter the water to explore coral formations, search for tropical reef fish, and observe turtles as they move through the reef or rest along the bottom. Depending on conditions and wildlife activity, you may also encounter rays, octopus, eels, and other marine life that inhabit the Olowalu coastline. Throughout the experience, your guide shares knowledge about the reef ecosystem, local history, and the marine environment that makes this area so special.
From December through mid-April, the tour includes the added possibility of whale watching as humpback whales migrate through the waters off Maui. The peak months for whale activity are typically January through March, when mothers, calves, and competing males are most commonly seen. During whale season, guides keep watch throughout the tour for whale activity and will use a specialized underwater hydrophone to let guests listen to live whale songs beneath the kayak. While whale encounters are a seasonal bonus, the kayak and snorkel adventure itself is available year-round and offers an unforgettable way to experience Maui’s coastline from the water!

FAQs
What marine life can I expect to see on the water at Olowalu?
Olowalu Reef is home to Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu), hundreds of colorful tropical fish including butterflyfish, parrotfish, wrasse, and surgeonfish, as well as the occasional spinner dolphin, manta ray, and reef shark. From December through May, humpback whales are an almost daily presence in the surrounding waters of the Hawaiian Islands National Humpback Whale Marine Sanctuary.
Are the guides certified?
Yes. Your guides hold Hawaii Marine Naturalist certification, PADI Pro Divemaster certification, American Red Cross Lifeguard certification, and CPR/AED/First Aid Instructor credentials through the PADI Emergency First Response program. The lead guide has been guiding these specific waters since 2001 with over 21 years of hands-on experience.
What is the best time of year to visit for the full experience?
December through May offers the complete experience — kayaking, whale watching, and snorkeling all in one tour. Turtle sightings at Olowalu Reef are extremely common year-round. For the best snorkeling conditions with calm, clear water, April through October is ideal.
What sunscreen can I use and why does it matter?
Common sunscreens contain chemicals that can harm coral reefs, as the particles are small enough to be absorbed by corals, causing toxicity and bleaching. Reef-SAFE sunscreens use non-nano mineral particles that are too large for corals to ingest. Please avoid oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens. Consider wearing a long-sleeve rash guard as an alternative. If you choose a mineral-based sunscreen, ensure it is labeled "non-nano."
Can I snorkel with a mustache or beard?
You can snorkel with a beard or mustache, but facial hair can prevent a tight seal between the mask and your face, which may cause water to leak in. It's often recommended to shave at least your mustache before snorkeling. If you prefer not to shave, bring petroleum jelly or chapstick — coating your mustache may help create a better seal.
Can I wear glasses or contacts?
You can't wear glasses with a snorkel mask, but contacts are totally fine and often the best option for clear visibility underwater. If you have a prescription mask, feel free to bring it. Fun fact: everything appears about 25% larger and closer underwater, which helps a bit even without correction.
What is included in a private tour versus a regular group tour?
On a private tour, your guide is exclusively focused on your group for the entire experience. You won't be sharing the water with other guests from different bookings, which means more flexibility on pacing, more time at locations that interest you, and a much more personalized experience. It's ideal for families with young children, couples celebrating special occasions, or groups who prefer a relaxed, unhurried adventure.
