Description

Journey to the Top of Maui & Explore a World Above the Clouds!

Few drives on Earth change as dramatically as the road up Haleakalā. On this private tour, your guide takes the wheel as you leave Central Maui behind, wind through the farms and ranchland of Upcountry Kula, and follow the historic Haleakalā Highway into the summit district of Haleakalā National Park—a high-elevation volcanic landscape that feels worlds away from the beaches below.

Along the way, stretch your legs among the trees of Hosmer Grove and listen for native Hawaiian birds, learn about the mountain's natural and cultural history at the Park Headquarters Visitor Center, and gaze into the vast summit depression from Leleiwi Overlook. On daytime departures, walk the Halemauʻu Overlook loop and keep watch for the rare ʻāhinahina (Haleakalā silversword) before topping out at Puʻu ʻUlaʻula, the island's 10,023-foot (3,055 m) high point.

Choose a sunset departure and the day builds toward its finale at Keoneheʻeheʻe Overlook, where the light shifts across the summit landscape above the clouds. With the vehicle to yourselves and a stocked cooler on board, your guide shapes every stop around your group's interests and the best views of the day.

Duration

  1. 6 to 8 Hours
  2. Hiking: a short walk through Hosmer Grove, plus the 1.8-mile (2.9 km) Halemauʻu Overlook loop on daytime departures when time, weather, park access, and your group's pace allow.
  3. The office will confirm your exact pickup time based on your location, the season, and your selected departure.

Location / Where to Meet

  1. Door-to-door pickup from your resort, hotel, condo, cruise-port meeting point, or another agreed location on Maui, with return to your original pickup point.
  2. Cruise Guests: contact the team after booking so pickup can be coordinated with your ship's schedule!
  3. Restrooms: Rest stops are built into the day, and restrooms are available at the Park Headquarters Visitor Center.

Ages & Requirements

  1. All Ages Welcome: Children are welcome, although the length of the tour and time spent in the vehicle may be better suited to older kids and adults.
  2. Car Seats & Boosters Required: Families traveling with young children must bring their own appropriate car seats or booster seats, as these are not provided.
  3. Private Group Size: Maximum of 7 guests per private vehicle. Groups of 6–7 guests should be aware that the additional passengers will occupy middle seats.
  4. Walking & Trail Conditions: Expect short walks on uneven volcanic terrain at high elevations. Comfortable walking shoes with good traction are recommended.
  5. High-Elevation Considerations: Haleakalā's summit reaches 10,023 feet (3,055 m), where the thinner air can make physical activity more demanding. Take your time, stay hydrated, and notify your guide if you feel unwell.
  6. Cold & Changing Weather: Summit temperatures can be 30°F (17°C) or more colder than the coast, with strong winds, clouds, and changing weather conditions. Warm layers are essential.
  7. Post-Scuba Diving Altitude Restrictions: Recent scuba divers should wait at least 18 hours after a single no-decompression dive or 24 hours after multiple no-decompression dives before traveling to high elevations. These are general minimum recommendations, not a guarantee of safety for a trip to Haleakalā's summit. We recommend scheduling your summit tour before any scuba diving activities to avoid altitude-related decompression risks.

What's Included

  1. Private Luxury Ford Expedition and local guide
  2. Door-to-door pickup and return from your resort, hotel, condo, or meeting point
  3. Haleakalā National Park entry
  4. Customizable pace and stops
  5. Yeti cooler with ice and drinks
  6. Hand sanitizer and bug spray on board
  7. Air-conditioning, charging outlets, and Bluetooth sound system

Not Included

  1. Gratuity – Never expected, but if you have a great experience, please consider gifting 10–25% to your guide!
  2. Food and drink purchases at stops (such as the provisioning stop in Kahului)
  3. Car seats and boosters
  4. Towels

What to Bring / Wear

  1. Warm Layers or a Jacket – Summit temperatures can drop 30°F (17°C) or more below the coast, especially at sunset. Easy-to-remove layers, a fleece or insulated jacket, a beanie, and lightweight gloves all help.
  2. Long Pants – Especially for sunset departures. Comfortable, moisture-wicking layers work better than jeans.
  3. Comfortable Walking Shoes – Closed-toe shoes with grippy tread that can get dirty.
  4. Sun Protection – Brimmed hat, sunglasses, and reef-safe sunscreen. The high-elevation sun is strong even when it's cool.
  5. Reusable Water Bottle & Snacks – Stay hydrated at altitude; there's a provisioning stop at the start of the day.
  6. Credit Cards & Cash – For food, drinks, and purchases at stops.
  7. Cameras & Binoculars – For sweeping summit views and spotting native birds at Hosmer Grove.
  8. Personal Medications – Bring any medications you may need during the day, including motion sickness medication (take before the tour).
  9. Car Seats or Boosters – If traveling with young children.

FAQs

What's the difference between the day and sunset departures?

Daytime tours focus on trails and clear summit views, including the 1.8-mile (2.9 km) Halemauʻu Overlook loop when time and conditions permit. Sunset departures build toward the changing light and colors above the clouds at Keoneheʻeheʻe Overlook before beginning the descent. Sunset timing varies by season.

How cold does it get at the summit?

Temperatures at the summit can be 30°F (17°C) or more below the coast, and wind and clouds can roll in quickly. Bring warm layers or a jacket and long pants—especially for a sunset departure.

How much hiking is involved?

The walks on this tour are short and flexible. Expect a short walk through Hosmer Grove and, on daytime departures, the 1.8-mile (2.9 km) Halemauʻu Overlook loop when time, weather, park access, and your group's ability permit. Because the tour is private, your guide can adjust the pace or skip a walk to suit your group. Keep in mind the summit sits at 10,023 ft (3,055 m), so take it slow.

Is Haleakalā National Park entry included?

Yes, park entry is included in your tour.

What plants and wildlife might we see?

Hosmer Grove is a great spot to look for native Hawaiian birds such as the Maui ʻalauahio, and the summit district is home to the rare ʻāhinahina (Haleakalā silversword). Wildlife and flowering plants can never be guaranteed, but your guide will help your group understand the landscape along the way.

What if it's cloudy at the summit?

Summit views can change quickly as clouds move across the mountain. Your guide will adjust timing and stops around current conditions to give your group the best available views of the day, but clear skies and sunset views can't be guaranteed.

Can I go to the summit after scuba diving?

Any activity that takes you above 1,000 ft (305 m) can trigger decompression sickness (the bends), and Haleakalā's summit reaches 10,023 ft (3,055 m). Divers Alert Network (DAN) guidelines suggest a surface interval of at least 12 hours after a single no-decompression dive, and at least 18 hours after multiple dives per day or multiple days of diving. Dives requiring decompression stops call for even longer. Plan your summit tour before your dive days, and discuss timing with your dive guide.

TripOutside highly recommends waiting at least 18 hours after a single no-decompression dive, and at least 24 hours after multiple dives per day or multiple days of diving.

Are your tours private?

Yes—every tour we offer is private. Your group has the vehicle and your guide to yourselves, with room for up to 7 guests in our Luxury Ford Expedition (guests 6 and 7 will ride in a middle seat). Pricing is a flat rate for the entire vehicle, not per person.

Is transportation included?

Yes. We offer door-to-door pickup and return from your resort, hotel, condo, cruise-port meeting point, or another agreed location on Maui. Our office will confirm your exact pickup time before your tour based on your location, the season, and your departure. If you're arriving by cruise ship, please contact us after booking so we can coordinate pickup with your ship's schedule.

Can we customize our itinerary?

Absolutely. Because every tour is private, your guide can shape the pace and stops around your group's interests and energy level, as well as the day's weather and park conditions. Stops on the typical itinerary may change with conditions and access.

What is the vehicle like?

Our Luxury Expeditions are modern, fully air-conditioned SUVs with charging outlets, a Bluetooth sound system (you're welcome to play your own music), and storage space in the rear. Vehicles are cleaned and disinfected before every tour.

Can we bring our own food and drinks?

Yes. We keep a Yeti cooler stocked with ice and drinks, with room for your own refrigerated items. Your itinerary also includes stops where you can pick up snacks, drinks, and local food (food purchases are not included).

Do you allow children? Do you provide car seats?

Children are welcome! Keep in mind that the length and content of a full-day tour may be more enjoyable for older kids and adults than for small children.

Car seats and boosters are NOT provided, but you're welcome to bring your own.

Do you provide motion sickness medication?

Due to liability, we can't provide motion sickness medication. If you're prone to car sickness, please take your medication before your tour begins.

What is your approach to sustainability?

We believe in sustainable tourism and follow the Hawaiian principle of Mālama ʻĀina—to care for and live in harmony with the land. On every tour, we stay on marked trails, follow current National Park Service rules and closures, and help protect Maui's sensitive natural and cultural places.
