Spring & Fall Zion Narrows Guided Hike

Experience one of the most iconic hikes in Zion National Park as you journey into the Virgin River and deep between towering canyon walls. This guided Narrows hike takes you upstream through cool flowing water, past hanging gardens, sculpted sandstone, and narrow canyon corridors that feel almost otherworldly.
Spring and fall offer some of the most dynamic conditions in the Narrows—cooler temperatures, flowing water, and fewer crowds than peak summer. With a knowledgeable guide leading the way, you’ll gain insight into the geology, ecology, and human history that shaped this incredible landscape, all while navigating the river safely and confidently.
This experience is about more than just the hike—it’s about immersing yourself in the canyon, learning as you go, and enjoying the journey without worrying about logistics or gear.

FAQs

What is the guided Narrows hike?

The Guided Narrows Hike is a full-day interpretive hike through the beginning section of The Narrows in Zion National Park, led by knowledgeable local guides. It covers approximately five miles round trip through the Virgin River (stopping at the beginning of Wall Street) with multiple river crossings and rugged terrain. Guides provide insights into the canyon’s geology, natural history, and local ecology.

How difficult is The Narrows hike?

Hiking The Narrows involves walking directly in the Virgin River over uneven, slippery rocks. Although the tour stays within a manageable portion of the canyon, participants should have moderate fitness and balance. The water depth varies throughout the year, and conditions can be more strenuous than a typical trail hike.

How far into The Narrows will we go?

Guided tours turn around at Wall Street, 2.5 miles upstream. You can choose to go shorter if needed; your guide will adjust for your group’s pace and comfort.

What makes hiking The Narrows so unique?

You’re walking directly in the river, surrounded by vertical canyon walls, pools, and hanging gardens — it’s immersive in a way no typical trail hike can offer. Seasonal light and flowing water transform the landscape constantly.

Can you hike The Narrows in spring & fall? What is it like to hike The Narrows in shoulder season?

You’ll encounter cool, refreshing river water that invigorates each step while the surrounding canyon walls display subtle color shifts as the sun moves across the sky. Spring brings emerging wildflowers and lush hanging gardens, and you may spot migratory birds and other wildlife active along the riverbanks. Fall offers a crisp, golden quality to the light, creating warm tones in the sandstone and dramatic shadows in the canyon. Crowds are lighter than in summer, giving you a sense of quiet exploration, and the temperature is generally comfortable for hiking in water without overheating or getting chilled. Guides may highlight seasonal plant growth, river dynamics, and natural history unique to these transitional months.
