Guided Angels Landing Hike in Zion National Park (Permit Included)

Hiking Angels Landing is one of those experiences that sticks with you long after you leave the canyon. Rising nearly 1,500 feet above the valley floor, this iconic trail climbs through steep switchbacks, narrow corridors, and finally along a dramatic ridgeline with sweeping views of Zion Canyon in every direction. It’s equal parts exhilarating, challenging, and unforgettable.
Going with a guide transforms the experience from something logistically stressful into something you can fully enjoy. Permits for the final chained section are required and notoriously difficult to secure—but on this guided tour, that’s handled for you. Your guide not only takes care of the permit process but also helps you navigate the trail with confidence, offering insight into Zion’s geology, history, and landscape along the way.
Whether you’re pushing yourself to reach the summit or deciding to stop at Scout Lookout and take in the views, this is a hike that meets you where you are, while still delivering one of the most iconic perspectives in the American Southwest.

FAQs

Do I need to worry about getting a permit?

No—that’s one of the biggest benefits of this tour. Your guide company is an authorized permit holder and will secure the permit for you or guide you using one you’ve already obtained. It removes the stress and uncertainty of the lottery system.

What is the hike actually like?

It starts out deceptively manageable, climbing gradually before hitting a series of steep switchbacks, including the famous Walter’s Wiggles. After that, you reach Scout Lookout, where many hikers take a break or decide to stop.

From there, the final half-mile is the iconic ridge traverse: narrow, exposed, and protected by chains bolted into the rock. It’s thrilling, a little intimidating, and incredibly rewarding.

How exposed is the final section?

Very. There are steep drop-offs and narrow sections where only one person can pass at a time. The chains provide stability, but this part of the hike requires focus, patience, and comfort with heights.

If that’s not your thing, stopping at Scout Lookout is still an amazing experience with incredible views.

What will we experience during the hike?

You’ll move through several distinct environments in a single hike:

  • Riverside start near the Virgin River
  • Refrigerator Canyon, a cool, shaded break from the sun
  • Steep red rock switchbacks climbing toward the ridge
  • Panoramic viewpoints opening up as you gain elevation
  • And finally, the narrow spine of Angels Landing, with 360° views of Zion Canyon

Along the way, your guide will share stories about the trail’s construction (built with hand tools in the 1920s), local geology, wildlife, and the cultural history of the area.

What if I don’t want to do the chained section?

That’s completely fine and very common. Many hikers choose to stop at Scout Lookout, which offers incredible views without the exposure. Your guide can help you decide what feels right for you in the moment.

How difficult is the hike?

It’s considered strenuous due to the steep elevation gain (about 1,500 feet over ~2.5 miles). The trail is well-maintained, but the sustained climb and exposure make it physically and mentally demanding.

Why should I hike Angels Landing with a guide?

Aside from handling the permit, guides add a lot:

  • They remove logistical stress (permits, timing, shuttle coordination)
  • They provide real-time support and confidence on exposed terrain
  • They bring the landscape to life with stories and insight
  • They help tailor the experience to your group’s pace and comfort level

It turns a bucket-list hike into a much more immersive, supported experience.
