Please also be respectful of any marine animals including but not limited to turtles, rays, sharks, seals, and dolphins. Please never chase, harass, feed, or TOUCH any of the marine species. Enjoy their company if they approach from a distance and calmly move away from them if in their path.

FAQs
What Are the Differences Between Snorkeling in Culebra vs. Vieques?
1. Travel Time & Accessibility
- Culebra: Takes about 45 minutes from Fajardo by powerboat, making it a quicker trip with more time in the water.
- Vieques: Takes about 1.5 hours, so expect a longer cruise but the reward of less crowded, untouched snorkeling spots.
2. Coral Reefs & Marine Life
- Culebra: Known for shallow, colorful coral gardens, featuring elkhorn, staghorn, and brain corals. These reefs are home to abundant tropical fish, angelfish, parrotfish, and frequent sightings of sea turtles (hawksbill and green turtles).
- Vieques: Offers larger, deeper reef formations, with massive brain coral, sea fans, and sea whips. You’ll encounter bigger marine life, such as eagle rays, stingrays, octopuses, and even nurse sharks, in addition to the usual reef fish.
3. Water Clarity & Conditions
- Culebra: Generally has exceptional water clarity (up to 80 feet visibility) and calm conditions, making it ideal for beginner and relaxed snorkelers.
- Vieques: Visibility varies but is usually great (50-70 feet), with some spots featuring stronger currents. It's better suited for more experienced snorkelers or those comfortable in deeper waters.
4. Best Snorkeling Spots on Each Island
- Culebra:
- Vieques:
- Playa Negra – Features black sand with rocky formations where moray eels and lobsters hide.
- Pata Prieta – Excellent coral structures and frequent ray and turtle sightings.
- Esperanza Reefs – Deeper sites with larger coral formations and bigger marine species.
- Luis Peña Marine Reserve – Shallow coral gardens with abundant sea turtles. Carlos Rosario – One of the healthiest reefs in Puerto Rico, teeming with marine life.
- Melones – A great mix of rocky reefs and coral, often calm and excellent for photography.
5. How to Choose Between Culebra and Vieques?
- Choose Culebra if you want quick access, calm waters, and colorful coral gardens with lots of turtles and tropical fish.
- Choose Vieques if you’re willing to travel farther for larger marine life, deeper reefs, and a more off-the-beaten-path experience.
Both destinations offer incredible snorkeling, and your private charter allows you to enjoy the experience at your own pace.
What if I get seasick?
Consider taking an over-the-counter remedy at least 1 hour before the trip.
Is snorkel gear provided?
Yes, but we always encourage guests to bring their own gear if they have ones that they enjoy using!
Who can snorkel?
Anyone who is confident in the water, has basic swimming skills, knows how to float and does not fear the water can snorkel. We provide floating belts that provide assistance if you are not a great swimmer. Our crew can provide the basic instructions of snorkeling if you are a first-timer. Our vessels are equipped with a custom swim ladder (catamaran) on the front of the vessel or a swim platform (motor vessel) for easy access in and out of the water. Our first beach stop usually is great for practicing snorkeling because the water is at standing depth and you can explore a small section of the reef without leaving the comfort of standing depth. If you don’t feel confident venturing away from the boat, there will be a line provided at the stairs or swim platform to hold on and view the natural aquarium without leaving the safety of the boat, or you can stay aboard with the captain where you can see and feed the fish without having to get wet.
What should I bring for the trip?
We recommend bringing reef-safe sunscreen, a towel, swimwear, but more importantly a smile cash for onboard purchases, sunglasses, a camera, and snacks. For added convenience, many of these items are available for purchase at The Shop at SG before departure.
Can pregnant women join this excursion?
Unfortunately, this trip is not recommended for pregnant women due to high-speed travel and motion in open waters.
What happens if the weather or sea conditions are unfavorable?
The captain may adjust the destination to safer, protected locations, such as Playa Tortuga, Icacos, or Palomino. These alternative sites offer stunning snorkeling and beach experiences. If we cancel due to weather or sea conditions, you will not be charged and will have the option to reschedule.
Is food or drink included?
Yes, a deli buffet lunch is included. Beers and craft cocktails are available as optional add-ons. Guests can also enjoy non-alcoholic beverages onboard.
What time should I arrive for check-in?
Check-in opens 45 minutes before departure and closes 15 minutes prior. We recommend arriving early to ensure a smooth boarding process.
Are gratuities included in the price?
Gratuities are not included but are highly appreciated by our crew for their exceptional service.
Where is Villa Marina Yacht Harbor located?
Villa Marina Yacht Harbor is located near Sardinera Beach in Fajardo, on Puerto Rico’s northeastern coast. Our vessels, including “Getaway Too,” “Runaway,” “On The Way,” and “By The Way,” depart from Dock M-21. The drive from metro San Juan takes 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic. Click here for directions.
What if it rains?
Rain showers are common in the tropics, but they often pass quickly. Weather on the east coast of Puerto Rico, where Fajardo is located, can differ from other areas like San Juan. If we cancel the trip due to unsafe weather, you will not be charged, and you may reschedule. However, if the trip is still operating, charges will apply even if it is raining in your location. For updates, call us before deciding not to attend.
What sunscreen can I use and why does it matter?
Common sunscreens contain chemicals that can harm coral reefs, as the particles are small enough to be absorbed by corals, causing toxicity and coral bleaching. Reef-friendly sunscreens are formulated without these harmful chemicals. Reef-SAFE sunscreens go a step further by using non-nano particles, which are too large for corals to ingest, helping to preserve marine ecosystems.
Please avoid sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens. Consider wearing sun-protective clothing, like long-sleeve rash guards, as an alternative to sunscreen. If you choose a mineral-based sunscreen, ensure it is labeled ‘non-nano.’
Are there sharks?
Shark incidents in Puerto Rico’s waters are extremely rare, and serious injuries are even rarer. When you enter the ocean, it’s important to remember that it’s a natural, wild environment with many types of marine life, including sharks. Although the chances of a shark-related injury are very low, they are still part of the ocean’s ecosystem, and the ocean should be approached with respect. By learning about sharks and following safety guidelines, you can minimize even this small risk.
Can you go underwater with a snorkel?
Yes, snorkels allow you to breathe with your face in the water at the surface. If you’d like to dive down, though, water will enter the snorkel, so you’ll need to hold your breath until you resurface. Once back at the surface, you can clear the snorkel by blowing out the air in your mouth hard. That should clear the snorkel, but if it doesn’t, tread the water, remove the snorkel from your mouth and dump the mouthpiece out.
Can I snorkel if I wear glasses?
Standard eyeglasses can’t be worn with a snorkel mask, but prescription masks are available for those who need vision correction while snorkeling. If you’re interested, consider looking into a prescription mask option before your tour. Alternatively, contact lenses can be worn under a snorkel mask, though it’s best to close your eyes if water enters to prevent losing a lens.
Can I snorkel with a mustache or beard?
You can snorkel with a beard or mustache but it can prevent a tight seal between the mask and your face, which may cause water to leak in. It is often recommended to shave at least your mustache before snorkeling. If you’d prefer not to shave your mustache, please bring petroleum jelly or chapstick with you. If you coat your mustache in that chapstick or jelly, it may be able to seal and prevent water from getting in.
Cancellation Policy
For individual reservations of 1-9 passengers:
Cancellations are allowed until 8:00 AM the 24 before the scheduled trip with no penalty.
For reservations of 10 or more passengers:
Cancellations must be made at least seven (7) days in advance.
We reserve the right to cancel a public sail if a minimum number of reservations are not received.
Customers will receive a full refund in case of operator cancellation due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
All marine activities are subject to water conditions. Please call a day prior for an update on cancellations or changes of destination due to water conditions as per the captain’s discretion. These decisions can be announced at check-in.
"NO SHOW" Policy:
If you don’t arrive on time, the ticket is NOT REFUNDABLE and NOT REUSABLE.
If we cancel a tour due to weather or sea conditions, you will not be charged. You will have the option to reschedule for the next available space. Our captains will make the final decision regarding weather conditions. Please note that a few passing rain showers are normal in the tropics, and rain is more likely in the center of the island and to the west. We constantly monitor weather reports, especially the conditions on the east coast. Fajardo’s weather can differ greatly from the weather in San Juan or wherever you are located. Please don’t make the mistake of deciding not to come if it’s raining where you are, as you will be charged if the trip goes out. If you have any questions about the weather conditions, please call us to be sure.
Passengers who are inebriated, hungover, or who are not in a condition to board the boat will be denied boarding by the captain.
Passengers that don’t meet the proper requirements will not be allowed to participate and the money will be non-refundable.
Due to the unique nature and small size of our groups, we are forced to remain firm about our cancellation policy. On the day of the excursion, we will be there, on-site, waiting and ready to serve you. Regardless of the cancellation reason, our time and fixed costs are already invested, and we may have turned down other customers by holding your space.
Thank you for your understanding.
