Portillo Cave Tubing & Tanama River Hiking - Utuado

Cave tubing on the Tamaná River means floating on an inner tube along the 1,000-foot (305 m) underground river passage inside Portillo Cave. You’ll drift slowly through a subterranean tunnel lined with limestone formations, surrounded by natural light from the cave entrance and ceiling fissures. Along the way, you may spot freshwater shrimp, crabs, small fish, and bats roosting above. It’s relaxing and thrilling at once—no paddling required, just float and absorb the underground landscape.

The hiking is moderate-to-semi-intense. After exiting the cave, you’ll hike through the Northern Karst forest along the Tamaná River, crossing the 150-foot (46 m) suspension bridge and scrambling over boulder-strewn paths with moss and wet rocks. The terrain includes natural pools where you can swim and jump to cool off. Fitness level: you should be comfortable with uneven ground, climbing over rocks, and some elevation changes. The total adventure is 3 hours (180 min), so pace yourself. Wear proper hiking boots or water shoes and bring plenty of water.

The Tamaná River in the Northern Karst region is geologically rare. Unlike typical cave tours, this experience combines a subterranean river passage (Portillo Cave) with above-ground hiking and swimming in natural pools. The river flows underground through limestone tunnels shaped by millions of years of water erosion, then emerges into open canyon sections with vertical cliffs, waterfalls, and boulder-strewn riverbeds. This combination—underground rivers, limestone walls, forested surroundings, and endemic amphibians—is unique to the Northern Karst and not found elsewhere in Puerto Rico. Wear quick-dry clothing and avoid cotton—you will get wet. Water shoes or hiking boots are essential; the terrain includes moss-covered rocks and wet surfaces. The cave stays cool, so consider a light layer under your swim gear. Sun protection is important for the hiking sections, which are exposed.
