Description
Standup Paddleboard Rental at the Hood River Waterfront
Grab a board and paddle across the calm, wind-protected waters of Hood River's waterfront on a rental that's built for beginners and intermediate paddlers alike. Launch from Nichols Boat Basin, widely considered the most wind-sheltered spot in Hood River to get out on a paddleboard, so you can find your balance before deciding how far to explore. If you're ready to venture further, paddle out to the Columbia River or around Wells Island.
The fleet is made up of solid-construction boards — no inflatables or soft foam boards here — kept current with the latest SUP technology through a partnership with a local retail shop. With roughly 30 boards in rotation, there's room to bring the whole group along for a day on the water, whether you're brand new to paddleboarding or looking to build on some experience.

FAQs
Do I need previous paddleboarding experience?
No experience is necessary. The launch site sits in the most wind-protected spot on the Hood River waterfront, which makes it a great place to find your balance before venturing further out, and the fleet is set up for both beginner and intermediate paddlers.
Is this a good spot for beginners to try paddleboarding for the first time?
Yes. The launch site is inside a protected cove that's shielded from the wind and current of the Columbia River, making it one of the calmest, most beginner-friendly places in Hood River to get started.
Can I paddle out to Wells Island?
When wind and current conditions allow, many paddlers make the roughly 1 mile (1.6 km) crossing from the protected cove out to Wells Island on the Columbia River. Conditions can change quickly on the Gorge, so check in with the rental team before heading out into open water.
