About

Big Lagoon is the largest of three lagoons within Humboldt Lagoons State Park. Stretching 3.5 miles long and separated from the mighty Pacific by a thin 2,100 foot sand spit, Big Lagoon is a kayakers paradise. With the sound of crashing waves just off in the distance, this protected body of water remains relatively calm and perfect for exploring by water.

The lagoon’s wetland habitat is an important rest stop for migratory birds on the Pacific flyway. A herd of Roosevelt elk sometimes congregate in the marshy area around Maple Creek and river otters play along the eastern shore. Seals and other marine mammals may be seen on the beach side of the lagoon.
