SEWARD DEPARTURE
Description
Guided Packrafting Trip on the Kenai River – Between Seward & Kenai, Alaska
There are two kinds of Alaska visitors: those who see the wilderness from the road, and those who get into it. This packrafting trip puts you firmly in the second category. You'll gear up in a drysuit, learn the basics of packrafting from your guide, and spend the better part of a day on a 7-mile (11.3 km) stretch of the world-renowned Kenai River — surrounded by towering mountains, glacial water, and scenery that most people only glimpse through a car window.
Packrafts are lightweight, highly maneuverable inflatable rafts originally designed for backcountry expeditions. They're stable enough for beginners, nimble enough to make the Class I–II (and occasional II+) rapids genuinely exciting, and compact enough that your guide can lead you to sections of river completely inaccessible by traditional raft. After a thorough on-shore lesson covering paddling technique, river reading, and safety, you'll launch onto the river and build confidence in calmer water before the current picks up and the scenery opens wide.
The Kenai River runs cold and clear from Kenai Lake, fed directly by glacial meltwater and framed by the rugged peaks of the Kenai Mountains. Wildlife sightings are common — bald eagles, Dall sheep, moose, and brown bears have all been spotted from the water. Your guide sets a relaxed pace with plenty of pull-outs for photos, stories, and re-running favorite rapid sections when conditions allow. The trip finishes with a scenic float to the take-out, followed by the kind of high-fives that only happen after a genuinely great day.

FAQs
What wildlife might I see on the Kenai River?
The Kenai River corridor is one of the most wildlife-rich stretches of water in Alaska. Bald eagles are commonly spotted from the water, and sightings of Dall sheep on the surrounding hillsides, moose in the riparian areas, and brown bears along the banks are all possible depending on the season. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but your guide will know where to look.
What class rapids are on the Kenai River at Cooper Landing?
The river is mostly Class I–II, with occasional Class II+ sections depending on water levels. This makes it accessible to first-time paddlers while still providing genuine excitement and the need to pay attention. Your guide will brief you on what to expect before you launch and will point out key features as you go.
When does the Kenai River packrafting season run?
The packrafting season on the Kenai River typically runs from late spring through early fall. Summer (June–August) offers the most reliable conditions and the longest days. Water levels and river character can vary significantly throughout the season — your guide will always tailor the route based on current conditions.
Do I need prior packrafting experience?
No prior experience is needed. Your guide will walk you through everything on shore before you get on the water — how to paddle, read the river, and what to do if you capsize. Packrafts are stable and forgiving, making them well-suited to first-timers. That said, this is a Moderate-rated tour and participants should be reasonably fit and comfortable on uneven terrain.
What should I wear under the drysuit?
The drysuit keeps you dry but not warm on its own — layering underneath is important. A moisture-wicking base layer plus a fleece or light insulated mid layer works well for most conditions. Avoid cotton entirely, as it retains moisture and will make you cold. Wool or synthetic socks are also recommended to wear under the provided river boots.
How far is the river from the Seward office?
The Kenai River at Cooper Landing is approximately 50 miles (80 km) from the Seward office, about a 1-hour drive. Round-trip transportation is included for Seward departures, and the drive itself passes through stunning Kenai Peninsula scenery.
Will there be photos taken, or can I bring my camera?
You're welcome to bring a waterproof camera or phone in a waterproof case. The company is not responsible for damaged or lost equipment. Selfie sticks and long poles are not recommended on the river. Your guide may be able to take photos on your behalf at key moments — ask at the start of the tour.
Do I have to paddle?
Yes — packrafting is an active experience and everyone paddles their own craft. Your guide will teach you everything you need before you hit the water, and will be with you throughout the float. There is no passive option on this tour.
What happens if I fall out of my packraft?
Stay calm, keep your feet up and pointed downstream, and follow your guide's instructions. Your PFD will keep you afloat. Swim situations will be covered thoroughly in the pre-trip safety briefing, and your guide is trained in swift water rescue.
