Description
Overnight Canoe & Kayak Camping Trip on the Upper James River — Eagle Rock to Buchanan
Escape into the Blue Ridge Mountains on this spectacular 2-day, 1-night paddle camping adventure on the Upper James River. Your guides will shuttle you 22 miles upstream to the Eagle Rock public boat landing, where you'll set off downstream through one of Virginia's most scenic river corridors — paddling the entire length of the Upper James Virginia Scenic River section before floating back to the Buchanan riverfront shop where your car is parked, making for a seamless, no-hassle finish.
This trip covers approximately 22 miles over two days, featuring over 25 easy Class I rapids and a handful of fun Class II rapids — the perfect mix of gentle floats, exciting water, and everything in between. The river winds through remote wilderness sections framed by stunning Blue Ridge Mountain views, dramatic river cliffs, and stretches of undeveloped shoreline that make it feel like you have the whole river to yourself. Along the way, keep an eye out for bald eagles, osprey, great blue herons, white-tailed deer, river otters, and a rich variety of other wildlife that call the James River home.
On Day 1, you'll paddle downstream and pull off at your private overnight campsite at Horseshoe Bend Campground (River Mile 29.1), a riverfront primitive campsite reserved exclusively for livery customers. Set up camp, build a fire, and enjoy an evening under the stars with the sound of the river as your backdrop. Day 2 brings a relaxed morning paddle back to the Twin River Outfitters shop in Buchanan — ending right where your car is parked, with no return shuttle needed.
This is one of the most popular routes on the Upper James River and an ideal introduction to multi-day paddle camping in Virginia — accessible enough for paddlers with basic canoe or kayak experience, yet scenic and wild enough to feel like a true backcountry adventure.

FAQs
Do I need prior paddling experience for this trip?
This trip is suitable for paddlers with basic canoe or kayak experience. It is self-guided and unguided — no staff will accompany your group on the water. You should be comfortable controlling your boat, navigating easy Class I and Class II rapids, and self-rescuing if needed. If you are brand new to paddling, consider starting with a shorter day trip first.
Is this trip guided?
No — all trips are self-guided. You'll receive a thorough 20-minute safety orientation and detailed river maps before you launch, but no staff will accompany you on the water. You are responsible for yourself, your group, and all rented equipment.
What rapids will we encounter on this trip?
This route features over 25 Class I rapids and a few Class II rapids including named rapids like Richie's Falls and Quarry Rapid. Class I rapids are fast-moving water with small waves and few obstructions. Class II rapids are straightforward with wide, clear channels that occasionally require basic maneuvering. This is a great introduction to moving water paddling.
What wildlife might we see on this trip?
The Upper James River is teeming with wildlife. Past paddlers have spotted bald eagles, osprey, great blue herons, great egrets, wood ducks, mergansers, white-tailed deer, river otters, Canada geese, cedar waxwings, and a wide variety of fish including smallmouth bass. Keep your eyes peeled — wildlife sightings are a highlight of this trip.
What is the Horseshoe Bend Campground like?
Horseshoe Bend is a private, primitive riverfront campsite reserved exclusively for Twin River Outfitters livery customers — it is not open to the general public. Each site includes a fire ring and picnic table. Porta potties are available nearby. There is no potable water at the campsite; 5-gallon water jugs are provided. Firewood is available for purchase. Quiet hours are 9pm–8am.
Do I need to bring my own camping gear?
Yes — tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, camp stoves, and cookware are not included and must be brought by each group. Food and drinks for the trip are also not included.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Trips run rain or shine unless there is a severe weather event or unsafe river conditions. Trips will not launch when the combined air and water temperature is under 100°F (38°C), when water temperature is under 55°F (13°C), or when river levels are too high or too low. In the event of a trip cancellation due to conditions, full refunds are provided.
What is the river water level policy?
The Upper James River closes to paddlers when the river exceeds 6.0 feet on the Buchanan James River Gauge. River levels are monitored daily and trips are only launched when conditions are safe. You can check current river levels at Twin River Outfitters' website.
Can I bring my dog?
Dogs are permitted but not strongly recommended. If you do bring a dog, they must remain on a leash and under your direct control at all times. You are responsible for your pet's safety on the river and at the campsite.
Do I need to book in advance?
Yes — advance reservations are required for all trips. Walk-ins are not accommodated.
Where do I leave my car keys?
You can leave your car keys in the key drawer at the shop before your shuttle departs. Your car will remain safely parked at the Buchanan shop for the duration of your trip.
Is parking available?
Yes — free parking is available at the Twin River Outfitters shop at 640 Lowe Street, Buchanan, VA.
Can I bring a camera?
Yes — a waterproof camera is recommended. The company is not responsible for any damaged or lost items.
Are alcoholic beverages allowed?
Alcohol is strictly prohibited on the river. It is permitted only in moderation at the campsite when consumed responsibly. Customers who arrive under the influence of alcohol or drugs will not be put on the river and will not receive a refund.
Is glass allowed on the river?
No — glass and styrofoam are not permitted on the James River.
Cancellation Policy
Customers will receive a full refund with 4 days advance notice of cancellation. Customers will also receive a full refund in cases where Twin River Outfitters cancels the trip due to high water levels or severe weather or other unforeseen circumstances as deemed appropriate by the Outfitter.
