Description
Overnight Canoe & Kayak Camping Trip on the Upper James River — Buchanan to Alpine
Overnight Canoe & Kayak Camping Trip on the Upper James River — Buchanan to Alpine
Looking for a relaxed, beginner-friendly overnight paddle without biting off more than you can chew? The Buchanan to Alpine trip is the shortest overnight option on the Upper James River — just 10.5 miles over two easy days — making it the perfect introduction to multi-day paddle camping in Virginia.
Day 1 is a gentle 6-mile float from the Twin River Outfitters shop in Buchanan down to the private Arcadia Campground (River Mile 43.5), taking roughly 2–3 hours of paddling. You'll encounter 5 rated Class II rapids along the way, impressive mountain views, and a remote wilderness feel that belies just how manageable the paddle is. That leaves you with plenty of afternoon time to set up camp, explore, fish, or simply relax riverside before nightfall.
Day 2 is an even shorter 4.5-mile paddle from Arcadia to the Alpine take-out — just 1 to 1.5 hours on the water. The Arcadia to Alpine section is renowned among fishing enthusiasts and is listed as a top smallmouth bass stretch in multiple Virginia fishing guides. Your guides will pick you up at Alpine at 10:30 AM.
This trip is especially well suited to families with younger kids, fishing-focused groups wanting to take their time working each rapid, or anyone wanting to ease into overnight river camping before tackling a longer route. All trips are self-guided with a detailed 20-minute safety orientation and river maps provided before you launch.

FAQs
Is this trip suitable for beginners or families with young kids?
Yes — this is the most beginner-friendly overnight trip on the Upper James River. At just 10.5 miles over 2 days with short daily paddling times, it's ideal for families with younger children, first-time overnight paddlers, or fishing groups who want to take it slow. Basic paddling experience is still helpful.
Are the trips guided?
No — all trips are self-guided. You'll receive a thorough 20-minute safety orientation and detailed river maps before launching, but no staff will be on the water with you.
What rapids will we encounter?
This route features 5 rated Class II rapids along with Class I water. Class II rapids have wide, clear channels that occasionally require basic maneuvering — manageable for most paddlers with a little confidence on the water.
Is this a good section for fishing?
Absolutely. The Arcadia to Alpine stretch on Day 2 is widely regarded as one of the top smallmouth bass sections on the Upper James River and is highlighted in multiple Virginia fishing guidebooks. Groups that want to spend extra time fishing each rapid will love the short daily distances this trip offers.
What is the pick-up time at Alpine on Day 2?
The return shuttle pick-up at Alpine is at 10:30 AM — this is a firm deadline with no exceptions. Please plan your Day 2 paddle accordingly.
What is the Arcadia Campground like?
Arcadia is a primitive riverfront campground available to both livery customers and the general public. Each numbered site includes a fire ring, picnic table, and level tent pad. Porta potties are nearby. There is no potable water; 5-gallon water jugs are provided. Firewood is available for purchase. Quiet hours are 9pm–8am.
Do I need to bring my own camping gear?
Yes — tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, camp stoves, and cookware are not included. Food and drinks are also not included.
What is the weather and river level policy?
Trips run rain or shine unless there is a severe weather event or unsafe conditions. Trips will not launch when the combined air and water temperature is under 100°F (38°C), water temperature is under 55°F (13°C), or when river levels are outside safe limits. Full refunds are issued for outfitter-initiated cancellations.
Can I bring my dog?
Dogs are permitted but not strongly recommended. They must remain on a leash and under your direct control at all times.
Do I need to book in advance?
Yes — advance reservations are required for all trips.
Is alcohol allowed?
Alcohol is strictly prohibited on the river. It is permitted only in moderation at the campsite when consumed responsibly.
Is glass allowed on the river?
