Description
PADI Open Water Diver Certification in Catalina Island - 3 Days
Ready to become a certified diver? This course takes you from first breaths underwater to a lifelong certification that lets you dive anywhere in the world. The program runs in three phases: knowledge development to learn the basic principles of scuba, five confined water dives to build your core skills, and four open water dives where you put it all together in the protected waters of Casino Point Dive Park — one of the most accessible and celebrated shore dive sites on the West Coast.
- 1) Knowledge Development (online, independent study or in a classroom) to understand basic principles of scuba diving
- 2) Five Confined Water Dives to learn basic scuba skills
- 3) Four Open Water Dives to use your skills and explore! Your dive center offers two different options for getting certified.
Unlike programs that begin and end in a pool, every dive here happens in the ocean, so you'll build real confidence in real conditions from day one. Expect a fast-moving, hands-on few days: skills practice, guided kelp forest dives, and plenty of one-on-one time with your instructor before you walk away as a fully certified PADI Open Water Diver.
Duration
- eLearning path: complete the PADI online coursework independently before arrival, then approximately 2–3 days of in-water work on Catalina Island
- In-person path: no eLearning required beforehand — instead, complete classroom lectures with your instructor using a hard-copy manual over the course of 3–4 days on the island

FAQs
What does the 3-day Open Water certification include?
The course includes academic review, confined water skill development, and the 4 required open water certification dives in Casino Point Dive Park. All dive equipment is included. You leave Catalina Island a certified scuba diver.
Where do the open water dives take place?
All open water dives are conducted at Casino Point Dive Park, Catalina most celebrated marine protected area with over 800 species of marine life. Learning to dive in a kelp forest with sea lions and Garibaldi is a world-class introduction to the sport.
How difficult is the certification course?
Open water certification is designed to be achievable by most healthy adults. The academic and confined water sessions equip you thoroughly before any ocean diving begins. Catalina Divers Supply instructors are PADI five-star rated.
Do I need prior diving experience to take this course?
No certification is required to start, but you'll need to be comfortable swimming in deep water, and prior snorkeling or in-water experience is recommended. This course is designed to take you from zero experience to fully certified.
Will I be a certified diver after this course?
Yes. Once you complete all classroom, confined water, and open water requirements, you'll earn your PADI Open Water Diver certification, which allows you to dive independently anywhere in the world.
What if I don't finish all requirements within 3 days?
Some divers need extra time to complete their skills. Additional days or dives beyond the standard 3-day window are available for an extra fee.
Can I take this course privately instead of with a group?
Yes, a solo/private class option is available at a different rate if you'd prefer one-on-one instruction.
Can I fly after diving?
Flying too soon after scuba diving can be dangerous and may lead to decompression sickness. Divers Alert Network (DAN) guidelines recommend waiting at least 12 hours after a single no-decompression dive before flying or driving above 1,000 ft (305 m) elevation, and longer if you complete multiple dives. Please check with your instructor before making travel plans.
Can I dive with a mustache or beard?
You can dive with facial hair, but it may prevent a tight seal between your mask and face, which can let water leak in. Shaving your mustache beforehand is often recommended, or you can apply petroleum jelly or chapstick along the mustache line to help create a seal.
Can I wear glasses or contacts while diving?
You can't wear glasses under a dive mask, but contacts work well and are often the best option for clear vision underwater. Prescription masks are welcome if you have your own, since rental shops typically don't carry them.
What sunscreen can I use, and why does it matter?
Many common sunscreens contain chemicals that damage coral reefs and marine life. Please use a reef-safe, non-nano mineral sunscreen, and avoid sunscreens containing oxybenzone, octinoxate, or parabens. Sun-protective clothing like a rash guard is a great alternative.
What certification or safety oversight do the guides have?
All dives are led by PADI-certified instructors who guide you through both the topside briefing and your time in the water.
What marine life can I see when diving at Casino Point?
The kelp forest at Casino Point is home to garibaldi, kelp bass, sheepshead, moray eels, octopus, and even giant sea bass. Visibility here regularly exceeds 50 feet, making it one of the best shore diving spots for spotting marine life in Southern California.
