Description

Watch the Sunset, Light Up the Reef, & Discover Maui After Dark!

Start with a Maui sunset and end with an illuminated underwater world beneath your feet. Paddle a clear, pontoon-equipped kayak across Olowalu Reef as the sun sinks behind Lānaʻi, watching the colors change across the Pacific while daylight slowly fades from the reef below. Then, as darkness settles in, your kayak transforms into a window into Maui's nighttime ocean.

High-powered underwater lights illuminate the reef through the transparent bottom of your kayak, revealing creatures that are easy to miss during the day. Watch millions of tiny shrimp eyes sparkle in the light while searching for squid, nudibranchs, eels, reef fish, and nocturnal octopus moving through the darkness. Once anchored, additional lights are lowered into the water to attract marine life, and jellyfish may gather around the glow beneath and alongside the kayak. Best of all, you stay comfortably aboard the kayak throughout the experience—no nighttime swimming, wetsuit, or snorkeling required.

The adventure continues above the surface, too. As the stars emerge, your guide shares stories about Hawaiian mythology, Maui's past, native plants and animals, and the constellations overhead before guiding the group back toward shore along a carefully lit route. Once you're back on land, finish the evening with fresh pineapple sprinkled with li hing powder while talking story about everything you discovered. From sunset over Lānaʻi to nocturnal creatures glowing beneath your kayak, it's an unforgettable way to experience Olowalu Reef after the daytime crowds have gone.

FAQs

Do I need previous kayaking experience for this tour?

No! Beginners are welcome, and you don't need previous clear-kayaking experience. Your guide will introduce you to the equipment and basic paddling technique before heading out. The clear kayaks are also fitted with pontoons for additional stability and buoyancy, creating a steady platform for exploring the reef. Guests should simply be comfortable participating in an ocean kayaking activity that continues after sunset.

Why should I take a sunset and nighttime kayak tour?

Because you get to watch Olowalu Reef change from day to night. The adventure begins before sunset, giving you beautiful views as the sun drops behind Lānaʻi. Once darkness falls, underwater lights transform the clear bottom of your kayak into a window onto the nighttime reef. Add stargazing and Hawaiian stories from your guide, and it's a completely different experience from paddling the reef during the day.

Can you actually see marine life at night?

Absolutely—that's one of the highlights! After dark, high-powered lights illuminate the water beneath your clear kayak, revealing a different side of the reef. Depending on the night, you may see shrimp, squid, reef fish, nudibranchs, eels, octopus, and jellyfish attracted to or visible around the lights. One especially unusual sight is the reflection from countless tiny shrimp eyes across the reef below. Wildlife is wild, so specific sightings are never guaranteed.

How do we see and paddle safely after dark?

You'll be provided with headlamps, glow sticks, glow bracelets and necklaces, and your clear kayak is equipped with lighting for the nighttime portion of the adventure. Your guides also lead the return to shore along a lit route designed to help the group navigate around Olowalu's coral reef heads.

What happens to my belongings while we're kayaking?

A dry bag is provided for personal items you'd like to bring onto the water. The outfitter also has a team member remain behind to watch guests' vehicles and valuables while the group is out kayaking. You only need to bring your phone or GoPro if you'd like your own photos.

Do you have any tips for getting the best nighttime clear-kayak experience?

Dress comfortably for an evening on the water and bring your phone or GoPro if you'd like to capture your own photos—the rest of the essential gear is provided. Because the tour begins before sunset and continues after dark, a light layer can be helpful as temperatures cool. Try to minimize lotions or oils on areas that may touch the clear kayak, as residue and fingerprints can make the transparent surface harder to see through. Most importantly, give your eyes time to adjust after sunset and keep looking both below the kayak and above you—there's wildlife beneath the lights and stars overhead.

What makes a clear kayak different from a regular kayak?

A clear kayak turns the water beneath you into part of the experience. Instead of an opaque hull blocking your view, the transparent bottom allows you to look directly into Olowalu Reef while you paddle. That becomes especially unique after dark, when underwater lights illuminate the reef beneath the kayak and reveal nighttime marine life without requiring you to swim or snorkel.

Why do the clear kayaks have pontoons?

The pontoon attachments provide extra stability and buoyancy, making the kayaks extremely difficult to tip and creating a steadier platform for viewing the reef. That's particularly helpful at night, when you'll want to focus on looking through the kayak, watching marine life, and enjoying the experience rather than worrying about balancing the boat.

What safety measures are in place?

Your guides are hand-picked, safety-trained, and stay close by throughout the excursion. Life vests are individually fitted (sizes small through XXXL) with under-leg straps and a whistle, and every vest meets Coast Guard standards.
