Description
Northwestern Fjord Extended Overnight Kayak Trip – Guided Kayak Camping in Kenai Fjords National Park
This trip is one of the most remote and geologically extraordinary overnight expeditions available in Alaska — a fully guided, all-inclusive kayak camping adventure into Northwestern Fjord, one of Kenai Fjords National Park's best-kept secrets. Northwestern is a young fjord, its glaciers having retreated so recently that much of it wasn't even charted until 2002. What you'll find in their wake is raw, exposed geology unlike anywhere else in the park: five rugged tidewater glaciers rising steeply to the Harding Icefield, sheer cliff walls bearing fresh scars from retreating ice, striking pink granite from mineral oxidation, cascading waterfalls tumbling into emerald-green water, and beaches so newly uncovered that vegetation hasn't yet had time to take hold.
The adventure begins with a scenic ~2 to 2.5-hour water taxi ride aboard a private US Coast Guard-inspected 36-foot landing craft, crossing the Gulf of Alaska and passing through the Chiswell Islands — some of the most prolific seabird rookeries in the region. En route, watch for Steller sea lions hauled out on exposed rocky outcroppings, tufted and horned puffins skipping across the waves, Dall's porpoises, humpback whales, orca, bald eagles, and sea otters. The crossing itself is an adventure, traversing the submerged terminal moraine of Northwestern Glacier — a formation that stretches a full 8.75 miles (14 km) from the current glacier face, where ocean depths plunge from 400 feet on the outside to just 24 feet at the crossing before dropping to 600 feet on the other side.
Once in the fjord, days on the water cover 8–15 miles (13–24 km) at a comfortable, unhurried pace, moving from place to place — circumnavigating Striation Island, crossing in front of tidewater glaciers, exploring nesting seabird colonies on towering cliff faces, and beachcombing on newly exposed gravel shores. Unlike the lush temperate rainforest of Aialik Bay, Northwestern has no time for trees. The landscape here is raw, primal, and constantly surprising. Avalanche debris, alpine calving events, and rock slides are all part of the scenery. Evenings are spent relaxing at camp with a hot meal prepared by your guide, falling asleep to the sound of calving glaciers and the calls of seabirds.
Everything is taken care of: your guide, all meals freshly prepared in the on-site certified café and in the field, all camping gear, all kayaking equipment, and a fully customized float plan built around your group. The camping system travels with you in the kayaks each day — no fixed base camp required — allowing you to explore new terrain, new beaches, and new corners of the fjord throughout your expedition. A brief survey after booking captures your food preferences, kayaking experience, and trip goals so your guide can build the ideal experience for you.

Do I need kayaking or camping experience?
None at all. Your guide handles all logistics — float planning, meal preparation, camp setup, and safety. The trip is fully customized to your group's skill level and preferences, and a brief survey after booking helps the guide plan everything around you.
What makes Northwestern Fjord different from Aialik Bay?
Northwestern is geologically younger and dramatically more raw. Aialik Bay has lush old-growth temperate rainforest framing its glaciers, with wide valleys and a rich, layered coastal ecosystem. Northwestern has none of that — the glaciers have only recently retreated, and vegetation hasn't had time to take hold. Instead, you get vertical cliffs rising directly from the water, freshly exposed bedrock bearing the scars of glacial retreat, raw geological formations, and five tidewater glaciers shooting steeply up to the Harding Icefield. It's primal, otherworldly, and unlike anywhere else in the park.
How many glaciers will we see?
Northwestern Fjord is home to five tidewater glaciers — all accessible by kayak during your expedition. You'll paddle past and among them throughout your time in the fjord, watching calving events, navigating around icebergs, and camping on the beaches below them.
How far do we paddle each day?
Expect to cover 8–15 miles (13–24 km) per day at a comfortable, leisurely pace with frequent rest breaks, beach exploration, short hikes, and time to take in the scenery. The trip adapts entirely to your group's comfort and ambitions.
Will we stay in one camp or move each day?
The camping system travels with you in the kayaks, so the default is to move camp and explore new terrain each day. However, a fixed base camp approach is also possible if your group prefers. You'll discuss this with your guide at the pre-trip meeting the evening before departure.
When do I meet my guide?
All overnight guests must meet their guide the evening before departure. You'll go over your float plan, gear, packing, and any last-minute questions at the front office at a time arranged with your guide. This meeting is required and ensures everything runs smoothly for an early departure the next day.
Is camping gear provided?
Yes — tents, sleeping bags, bag liners, inflatable sleeping pads, cookware, bug nets, and all necessary camping equipment are provided. If you'd like to bring your own sleeping bag or personal gear, just let your guide know in advance so they can confirm suitability for the conditions.
Can dietary restrictions be accommodated?
Yes. After booking, you'll receive a survey to capture all dietary restrictions and food preferences. The team prepares food fresh in the certified on-site café and does their best to accommodate everyone. Please communicate any medical or allergy needs clearly.
Do you practice Leave No Trace?
Yes, strictly. Wag bags (human waste disposal bags) are provided and used on all overnight trips to protect the park's pristine coastline. Campfires are only built in pop-up fire pits to prevent lasting impacts on Northwestern's newly exposed beaches. Lightweight stoves are used for all cooking. The team follows all National Park guidelines and Leave No Trace principles throughout every expedition.
Can I bring alcohol?
Yes, you're welcome to bring your own alcohol. Please drink responsibly — backcountry conditions in Northwestern Fjord can change rapidly, and it's important for everyone in the group to remain safe and aware at all times.
What happens with valuables and my car?
Leave excess cash and valuables secured at your lodging or the office. Bring only what you need in waterproof, unbreakable containers. Bring $40–$50 for any incidental expenses, though you won't need much in the backcountry.
