SUP & Kayak Adventure on the Anahulu River, Hale‘iwa!

Discover the thrill of stand-up paddling or kayaking on Oahu’s North Shore with a tour designed for all experience levels. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned paddler, you’ll receive a personalized lesson tailored to your skill level, covering proper fundamentals and techniques. With new double kayaks available, those who prefer sitting over standing can also join in the fun, making this adventure perfect for individuals, couples, or groups.
Paddle down the calm waters of the Anahulu River, gliding under the historic Hale‘iwa Bridge — a favorite photo spot and a popular hangout for Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu). Along the way, take in lush tropical scenery, spot native birds, and often see turtles swimming or resting near the riverbanks. This route offers a peaceful and scenic perspective of Oahu’s North Shore that few get to experience.
The tour combines skill-building with exploration, letting you navigate the river and surrounding waterways while enjoying Hawaii’s natural beauty. First-time paddlers gain confidence, while experienced paddlers can explore at their own pace. Wildlife Guidelines

Sea turtles are a common sight in the Anahulu River, often swimming under the bridge, gliding past your board, or basking on the shoreline. As they are federally protected under the Endangered Species Act and by Hawaiʻi state law, it is illegal to touch, feed, harass, or get too close to them. Always keep a respectful distance (at least 10 feet / 3 meters), never chase or block their path, and take care not to disturb them with your paddle, kayak, or board. Quiet observation helps protect the turtles while letting you enjoy a memorable wildlife encounter.

FAQs

Do I need to be physically fit for this activity?

Basic fitness is helpful, but the water is calm and the pace is relaxed. It’s ideal for beginners or those looking for a gentle adventure.

Do I need prior paddleboarding or kayaking experience?

Not at all! This tour is suitable for all levels, and your guide will teach you the basics before you head out.

Can I choose between a kayak and a paddleboard?

Yes! You can choose what’s most comfortable for you, and your group can mix and match between SUP and kayak.

Is transportation included?

Transportation is not included for this tour. Guests will meet the guide at the Anahulu River in Haleiwa.

Do you practice Leave No Trace?

Hawai’i has a very fragile ecosystem here in Hawaii. It is important that you don’t walk on the reefs, wear reef safe sunscreen (read our blog about sunscreens), keep a good distance from turtles and monk seals, and make sure you leave every place cleaner than you found it. You may notice your guide picking up trash at beaches and hikes. That is to ensure that rubbish doesn’t end up in our oceans, and to leave the area cleaner for the next people to enjoy. We encourage you to do the same while you are here in Hawai’i. Mahalo nui loa.

Why do you paddle down the Anahulu River in Hale’iwa?

Paddling down the Anahulu River in Hale‘iwa lets you experience Oahu’s North Shore from a unique perspective. On this calm, scenic route, you’ll glide under the historic Hale‘iwa Bridge, a popular spot for photos and a favorite hangout for Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu). Along the way, you can enjoy lush tropical scenery, spot native birds, and often see turtles swimming or resting near the riverbanks, making it a memorable and family-friendly paddling adventure.

Are your tours suitable for all ages?

Yes, our tours are designed to be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels. We keep our tours private, that way we can custom tailor the day to what you want to see and do, and what you can handle.

Can I touch the turtles or marine life while paddleboarding or snorkeling?

No, touching turtles or other marine life is not allowed. Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) and other reef animals are protected by law, and it’s important to respect their space. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to observe and photograph them up close without disturbing their natural behavior.

What sunscreen can I use and why does it matter?

Common sunscreens contain chemicals that can harm coral reefs, as the particles are small enough to be absorbed by corals, causing toxicity and coral bleaching. Reef-friendly sunscreens are formulated without these harmful chemicals. Reef-SAFE sunscreens go a step further by using non-nano particles, which are too large for corals to ingest, helping to preserve marine ecosystems.

Please avoid sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens. Consider wearing sun-protective clothing, like long-sleeve rash guards, as an alternative to sunscreen. If you choose a mineral-based sunscreen, ensure it is labeled ‘non-nano.’
