Description

Norris Glacier Flightseeing, Hiking & Packrafting Adventure

Soar, trek, and paddle through Alaska’s wild beauty on this exclusive 5-hour multi-sport experience. This adventure combines three iconic Alaskan activities into one seamless journey: a floatplane flightseeing tour, a guided glacier hike, and an unforgettable paddle across an iceberg-studded glacial lake in your own packraft.
Your adventure begins at the seaplane dock, where you’ll board a six-passenger floatplane and lift off from the water, bound for the rugged wilderness of the Juneau Icefield. As you glide above snowcapped peaks and winding river valleys, keep your eyes peeled for wildlife such as mountain goats, black bears, and moose roaming the alpine terrain below. The flight offers an unmatched aerial perspective of Alaska’s untouched landscapes before touching down on a remote, glacier-fed lake at the base of Norris Glacier.
After disembarking, you’ll begin a moderately strenuous hike across rocky, glacially carved terrain toward your launch point. Along the way, your expert guides will interpret the geology and natural history of the area, enriching the experience as you move deeper into the remote wilderness.
Once at the water’s edge, you’ll be outfitted with a dry suit and gear for your next challenge: packrafting. These stable, single-person rafts are designed for backcountry exploration and are the perfect way to navigate the glacial lake. With guidance from your instructors, you’ll paddle across icy waters toward the face of Norris Glacier, surrounded by the towering peaks and sculpted blue ice that define Alaska’s wild interior.
This trip is ideal for active adventurers seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience in Alaska. It requires a moderate to high level of fitness and comfort with hiking on uneven terrain and paddling in variable conditions — but the reward is an immersive, once-in-a-lifetime encounter with the raw power and beauty of the Alaskan backcountry.

What is the best time of year for glaciers?

The prime season for glacier tours is from May to September. Each month offers unique experiences:

  • May-June: Drier months with blooming flora.

  • September: Cooler, wetter conditions with fewer visitors.

Will I have a chance to walk on the ice?

Yes, this tour absolutely gets on the glacier! If you’re eager to experience walking on glacier ice, then this tour is perfect for you.

Please note, a specific amount of time on the ice cannot be guaranteed. The amount of time on the glacier is dependent on the group’s pace and weather conditions.

Are there ice caves at the glacier?

While we can trek on the glacier ice on this tour, it’s important to note that ice caves are an exceptionally rare phenomenon that appears sporadically. They should not be expected during the tour, and if they do happen to form, it will be considered a special occurrence.

Please note, if they do form, visiting specific features such as ice caves, moulins, etc. cannot be guaranteed. Your guide will assess potential hazards on the trip to determine if a particular area is safe to trek upon or enter.

Are there any physical requirements to participate?

Yes, clients must be able and conditioned to paddle 1 hour roundtrip and hike on uneven terrain up to 2 miles, and weigh under 250lbs due to float plane restrictions.

What is the weather like in Juneau?

“Plan for rain, pray for sun!” is our motto in Southeast Alaska. We are surrounded by the Tongass National Rainforest, part of the largest temperate rainforest in the world. Juneau receives approximately 60-100 inches annually. Average temperatures in the summer are in the 50s and 60s. April, May, and June are Juneau’s driest months. July and August are the warmest. In September it becomes cooler and wetter.

Will the tour be canceled if it's raining?

We operate our tours rain or shine. Juneau is situated in the world’s largest temperate rainforest, the Tongass National Forest. Rain is a common occurrence in Juneau, and we embrace it as part of the experience. To ensure your comfort, we provide each guest with a rain jacket, rain pants, and rain boots.

Should ABAK determine that weather conditions present a safety concern, we will regretfully cancel the tour. In such instances, a full refund will be issued to our guests. Safety remains our top priority, and we appreciate your understanding in this regard.

What sizes do you have for rental gear?

For all tours we provide rain gear to protect from the changing elements. This gear can be used or stowed in your backpack or dry bag.

Rain Gear is waterproof and will go over your personal gear. It is sized more like a poncho than a standard jacket. So if you wear Women’s Medium mostly, a Women’s Medium Jacket and Pants will easily fit over your clothes.

  • Rain Gear Sizes: Men and Women’s XS – XXL, Youth S-L

For the tours involving paddling, we provide neoprene rubber boots made by Bogs or Grundens. These boots will be in place of your shoes and you are welcome to store your personal shoes at our warehouse facility.

  • Rubber boots sizes: Men’s 6 – 14, Women’s 6-11, Youth 2-5

ABAK follows Leave No Trace Principles and if you need to use the bathroom during this time we request that you pack out any trash – this includes toilet paper.
