FAQs

Are wetsuits recommended?

Wetsuits are not usually necessary in warmer months, as the South Fork is a slow-moving and relatively shallow river. However, in cooler spring or fall conditions, wetsuits are recommended. Wetsuits are available for rent in Men’s and Women’s Sizes from Small to Extra-Large.

How long does the kayak trip take?

The most common route to Liberty Grove takes between 1.5 and 3 hours, depending on river flow, how often you stop, and how much you paddle.

Do I need any kayaking experience?

Nope! The South Fork of the New River is calm and perfect for beginners. We’ll give you a quick orientation before you launch.

What is the difference between single and tandem kayaks?

Single kayaks are great for solo paddlers or those who want a little independence on the water. Tandem kayaks (2-person) are ideal for couples, parents and kids, or friends who want to paddle together.

What kind of wildlife might we see?

Keep an eye out for great blue herons, river otters, turtles, deer, and a wide variety of songbirds. The South Fork is rich with natural beauty and wildlife viewing opportunities.

Can we swim in the river?

Yes! The water is typically calm and shallow in many areas, and there are plenty of spots where you can safely hop out for a dip.
